Engine falls off a 33 year old B747Jumbo
CHICAGO (AP) _ A cargo plane bound for New York's Kennedy International Airport landed safely at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after losing an engine somewhere over Michigan.
The Kalitta Air jet took off from O'Hare International Airport in Chicago late Wednesday. It later reported mechanical problems with one of its engines, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman in Chicago said. The Boeing 741-R was able to fly but was diverted as a safety precaution to Detroit, where it landed without incident, FAA officials said. No one was injured. After the landing, airline personnel discovered the engine was completely gone, FAA officials said.
Michigan authorities searched Thursday for the engine, which may have fallen into Lake Michigan, the FAA said. The FAA will investigate the incident, but the results of an investigation could take weeks, the FAA said.

Maybe if Connie spent a little more on the airplanes instead of the dragsters, thing's like that wouldn't happen... :D
BTW... that happened last year some time... not sure when exactly....

Locktite...
Loctite appeared to have worked as the mount bolts are still there....along with part of the case....perhaps a bit more attention to vibration monitoring.... :p

I thought their top fuel dragster looked different with a jet engine on it.

Can you imagine the torque steer the pilot encountered when that fuċker fell off ? :2purples:
Great job on the pilots part bringing it down.
The chances of survival are in direct relation to the angle of arrival :D

Nitromethane is getting expensive.

I bet this is the reason Dougy is leading top fuel dragster points... whats a lost CF6 here and there, compared to a couple of Wallys on the mantel. :D :D :D

CHICAGO (AP) _ after losing an engine somewhere over Michigan.
The Keyword is somewhere
Now I am certainly no expert on aircraft, but dont you think there was a guage or two hooked up to that engine? If the pilot was watching the instrument panel like he should have been, he would have went "Oh shit the engine just fell off, I had better mark the GPS so they can find it"
Ill bet the car rental rate at the airport went up considerably for the return trip
Truly amazing

Kalitta air is, from what I remember, a "freight only" company.

Had I been a passenger I would have asked for a refund plus the cost of replacing my underwear.

Well at least there is some good news to this. And BTW how do they know no one was injured if they havent found the engine yet?

I do think that if anyone had been hurt by an engine in free-fall from 33,000 feet up, or if it had even landed ANYWHERE NEAR people, it would have made the news.
I suspect it landed in the middle of nowhere, alone.

This thread is starting to sound like a morning show. bit-a-bing-bit-a-bang! I have met more people from Boeing in the channel this year then any other representive of a company. Maybe we should start checking under the hoods. Not to long ago, I think they still have some in the fleet (been gone a while) in the new frigates, that they were building, they used DC-10 engines. In the old Destroyer Navy (heavy oil) took hours to spool up for deployment, with the new ones, light them up and pull from the pier. Next door neighboor a weekender from the C-17 line. He is not a happy boy right now. Thanks for the pic's, forwarding them to my brothers at Northrup and Falcon. They have their own versions of Channel shots. The brother at Falcon has shots of last summer of a ferry job, brand new being brought over from France, touched down in Little Rock, folded the nose wheel and that was that. You want to see money being spent, he sells the interiors on the new Falcons. Check book please.

NTSB says that the rear saddle, which was due to be inspected in less than 200 hrs, gave out which let the turbine hang which in turn killed the forward saddle. After further inspection, the #3 saddle was found to have a large fracture in the same location. OOps.
I'll find the NTSB article and post it.

I wasn't able to find the probable cause for it in the NTSB data base, just the factual report...
Post a link if you can, I'd like to read it...

Ron White was wrong....
"Passenger asks with the engine gone how far will the other one take us? Ron White says, "All the way to the sceene of the crash, which is pretty handy seeing as that's where we are heading!" :) :) :)

Snakewrench is correct that is the rear mount. Engine is a PW-JT9 not a CF-6. It did exactly what was designed to do. Rather have nothing there, than a big piece dangling when landing. Gary
Man I cannot believe I just said that. What a set-up.
