hey guys this boat of mine has been sitting for 2 years since painted. i'm 23. and love having projects. i've basically finished my 1980 malibu project so now its time for this I think. hope you guys dont mind me pickign your brains. I seriously dont know anything about boats yet. there are a few pictures below showing motor plates and what not. if you can help me identifiy them it'll help me understand what I have to work with.
I have a 455 which i will be rebuilding. I'm figuring i will be putting in an oil restriction set up, and a 10qt oil pan. thats about it. limit my revs to 5000rpm. and i'll be going with a berkley and a AA prop
cheers!!!
what I accomplished today , finshed putting the carpet in with contact cement and then mounting the seats

what my seats get mounted too, and I carpeted the inside. little compartments as you can see under the seats :bigthumb:

here is a picture of the hull as someone was asking
i measured it, froom where the insert moulding would get mounted on the boat. (seam line made from when the bottom and top are resined together) its probably 18-22" deep

above is some pictures of the motor compartment access panel. its all going to be open. so it really doesnt' serve to much purpose. but probably will be handy. i'm goign to trick it out. initially it was just going to be put in place with hood pins... which is fine. but i'm going to hindge it. so that it folds baack, and piovts at the back part. and have two gas shocks which will hold it open. and the fasteners are going to be ones used on desiel motor homes ( i work at an rv dealership and actually would like to use the same fastaners on a hood as well for a car) they use them primarily on the access doors for the engine at the back. should be pretty trick.
and then I'm goign to carpet the underside, and mount one single red oxidized oar
TELL ME WHAT YOU GUYS THINK.
I'M HERE TO LEARN ABOUT THESE BOATS AND OLDS. I'M ONLY 23 AND BUILT MY LAST CAR BY MYSELF AND USED TONES OF KNOWLEDGE WHICH I FOUND ONLINE FROM A FORUM I AM STILL APART OF maliburacing.com
so dont think i'm just here to look . i'm here to seek help and get

You came to the right place. There are many helpful people on here who will guide you in the right direction. The work you have completed looks top notch. I'm far from being one of the old timers with tons of knowledge to pass on but I'll mention a few generalizations about your project. From the looks of that hull you are not going to be setting any speed records, so build accordingly. Its a fine looking hull, just looks big, probably on the heavy side, and it has a deep V. These are all good things if you are building an all around pleasure/family boat. Contributing to this is that you are going with the Olds. Good motor and they can be fast but they take some specialty building and generally higher cost parts than building a high HP ford/chevy. Find the issue of ***boat from a few months ago that has the 455 Olds tech article. It was very informative. Carefully build that motor for torque and driveability, keep it below 5000 RPM's and it will power that beast reliably for many years. If the machine shop looks at you a little crazy when you start talking about oil restrictors, large capacity oil pans, and oil return lines......stop what you are doing and go find a shop that says yes, we know how to do that, we've done that, and we have many olds customers whose motors have run hard for many seasons. Get good torque/HP at a lower RPM and you can run a bigger cut of impeller in the pump (impellers are usually rated AAA/AA/A/B/C. AAA takes the biggest bite, is generally the quickest out of the hole, and provided you have enough HP to turn it will return good performance at a lower RPM. Conversaely,a C cut will take a smaller bite and require higher RPM's to do the same amount of work as the AAA cut. This is a drastic over-simplification as there are all kinds of variables like max-efficiency, shoe, ride-plate, diverters etc. Just run the biggest cut impeller you can match to the motor and you will have happy low RPM boating and be able to pull skiers all day. On a positive note your pump looks like its already been set back so there is one thing done that you won't have to worry about. Browse around this forum and you will find many answers to many of the common jet boat questions like cooling and wiring diagrams, diverter installs, olds tech etc etc. Happy building-Aluminum Squirt

Hey, I just realized something, you are from Canada EH! You hoser, build an aluminum boat, you live in the promise land of all things aluminum. I take back all the above. Sell parts to somebody in the states, go to Eagle racing and pick out an aluminum hull and start over :boxed: -Aluminum Squirt

i mean my gas tank looks just like that, my dash. the wing. slightly diffrent transom.
Whats the length? I know mine is older, (the date on the gas tank is 72) gd. you don't know how hard I tried to find anohter boat like mine. Was the gas tank made by "skyline industrys"??
I am just a little excited here.

thanks for the replies guys, make me feel welcome. here is a link to more pictures of when i was doing the painting process. so you can see the whole boat.

i'm going to be using this in nice lakes such as osoyoos. so I'll stick with the fiberglass. going to school is going to restrict me on what i can and cant do right now. of course in the future I could always sell and buy something else.
as for the motor i will probably be doing almost all the work except machining. I think I know the 455 build up your taling about the guy I believe is on realoldspower.com

I am painting it right now. the Numbers are on a plate on the transom. Up until last night I had never seen another boat like this.
The gas tank had a metal sticker on top.
even the trailer is the same...
My boat had been siting for 17 years b4 I got it. ( friend of the family) Mine has a 421 pontiac in it that is not the orig motor( holes in the stringers for anohter mount) From what I have been told by long time jet boat guys it was a 65 mph ish boat.( should be alittle faster now do to about anohter 75 hp) That would bow stir if you had to got out of the thorrle fast. under neath a few layers of paint I found a black with sliver flake and gold flake gel coat. I have been running into the age old prob. Too much money, not enough time or too much time, not enough money.

well I wish you the best. its pretty cool that you have the same boat. do you have the exact name and length and year of it? i dont see any metal plate on mine. kinda got it from a shady character. so would that id tag be in the inside side of the transom? what corner or side?
i really like the look of the boat :)
i have a problem with my axle though, its bent!!!!

YeLLowBoaT
08-22-2006, 10:11 AM
Mines on the top left(if you were standing behind the boat) its about 6" from the edge of the opening I would take a pic, but its upside down right now.
Depending on how bad its bent you can fix it. All it takes is a torch, hammer, strait edge and some time. if its more then about a 1/4 just replace it. Alittle fyi about the springs. no 1 makes them any more. So if they are worn out you ether have to rearc them or do what i did and go from over slunge to under slung axle. it gave me the 2" of clearance I need for tires.( witch they also do not make any more for the old mags that are on it.) I wish you luck. Since it looks like you will beat me to the water let me know how it runs.
