I know this subject has been talked about, but I am looking for more power out of my 502 mag.. I currently am running a 23' Stingray to 73 mph gps on 80 degree day around 4800 rpm. I have a XR drive 1:36 ratio spinning a 26 pitch 3 blade mirage. I was thinking of having the heads done and possibly a new cam. I don't want to get into the lower part of the engine. I know I need MSD ignition. But any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Beware too much duration on the cam, it pushes the power into higher rev zone.
Intake, exhaust improvements, head porting or replacement can all net increases. Think carefully where you want the power so you can pick parts wisely.
Honestly, IMO, the only reason you "need" an MSD system is if you want a ton of adjustability such as exact advance curve and rev-limiting, or your current system is not working well. If your current system is working properly, all the hi-$$$$ ignition in the world won't make squat in additional HP. $1000 better spent elsewhere.

Instead of porting the stock heads , you may want to inquire here if anyone has a set of REALLY good heads for sale at a good price. You can then sell your stock heads and be better off in the long run. Just like SLR SS said, make sure the cam is going to work in the right RPM range. Most likely up to 6000rpm.

I have a complete vortech blower package for sale. Blower, superchiller, manifold, throttle bodies, fuel injection, computer, and FPR, for sale that would bolt right up to this motor.

Note this combo was also dyno'd with the OEM Gil short risers in wet configuration. Power loss was an average of 7HP in wet. This combo was flogged on the dyno for several days of testing.
This combination will work with silent choice with no reversion problems. AFR 305 or 315 heads would also work just fine.

Any one out there have a set of really good heads for sale or maybe an intake? I missed out a set of vortec 100 cc heads on ebay. Didn't know about the subject to determine whether or not they would give me any gains. I am learning a lot on this forum, but still have a ways to go. They sold for $500 and that seemed like a deal. Is doing the heads without doing a new camshaft a possibility?
thanks everyone,
Still learning

Cstraub69,
Hey Chris do you think my cam would work for his application. it seems like he has the same goal I had with my 502.
I sent him the specs if you forgot what they were.

J,
Yes the cam would be effective for what he has. He would have to put a set of Link bar Morel Hyd. roller lifters to deal with the lift but yes that cam is designed to work with the OEM heads.
