As part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard U.S. animal health, USDA initiated the implementation of the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) . NAIS is a cooperative State-Federal-industry partnership to standardize and expand animal identification programs and practices to all livestock species and poultry. NAIS is being developed through the integration of three components—premises identification, animal identification, and animal tracking. The long-term goal of the NAIS is to provide animal health officials with the capability to identify all livestock and premises that have had direct contact with a disease of concern within 48 hours after discovery.
(1) Every homeowner must obtain a 7 digit USDA ID # keyed to GPS with property owners and animals info.
(2) Every animal must be tagged with a radio freq.tag and 15 digit ID #
(3) Owners must report missing or dead animals within 24 hrs. or face $ 1000 fine for ea.day not reported...this includes the sale of an animal...
(4) Animals used on Trail Rides,Exhibitions,Parades,etc...must be listed and reported
(5) Vet's must report any non-tagged animals immediately..
Animals Regulated (so far ) Cattle,Bison,Swine,Sheep,Goats,Cervids(deer/elk), Horses, Poultry & Game Birds, Fish,Camelids(llammas) not cameltoes :p and Raieties(ostritch/emus) :rolleyes: dogs,cats,rabbits,turtles,etc are being considered...
