I have been having issues with my boat the last couple times out. Worked great the rest of the summer though.
If I get the motor above 3500 rpm it starts popping like it is bad timing or something.
I have checked timing, replaced cap & rotor, plugs, coil. Has fresh gas. Took the carb apart and made sure the jets were clean as well as the fuel filters. Saturday it still did it.
It has the motorcraft HEI distributor with the electronic box back on the transom. I want to upgrade this anyway, what is the recomendation?
Any suggestions would help. I am leaning toward a new carb and or the distributor.

If you are running a stock dist., check the shaft bushing for any looseness. Chevy stock HEI dist. are normally no good over 4200 to 4500 rpm because there is not shaft bushing. The shaft rides on a machined area of the housing. I am not sure about Motorcraft but it is worth checking.

this sounds just like the same problem I had the on my v-drive replaced the carb, replaced the points with a drop in electronic ignition, still kept popping an jumping at 2700 rpms I replaced the coil an took it to the river an got a speeding ticket but the boat ran great the sherrif even said that LOL
