That story reminds me of what happen when I rebuilt my first motor. Had it all complete and just had to drop the distributor in and put the nut on the air cleaner. Problem was the nut was no where to be found.
Well to make a long story short I took a gamble and hoped that maybe the nut went some other place other then where the dist. drops in. I was thinking even if it did drop in thru the manifold it would of went straight down into the oil pan.
WRONG it parked itself right in between the timing chain and gear. Cranked it over and BAM.....bent valve and damaged piston.
Now if I was up there I would make dam sure where that bolt went before I did anything else or I would say lets tear it down and do it again.
Now if that was a Chevy motor and not 460 Ford I would of been alright.
