I used a program called Trillian for a while. You can set it up to use AIM, YAHOO, Messenger, ICQ and IRC.

You still have to download and install AIM before Trillian.
I run AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, AND MSN via Trillian, and like it. I have zero pop-up troubles.
Do NOT install the other crap that comes with AIM (which means PAY ATTENTION to the installation settings, do not choose "express install", go "custom install" only, and de-check the fricking toolbar that come along, and anything else except the messenger client.
O(n a side note, unless you want your new machine to slow down gradually, get a copy of "Partition Majic", partition the "C" drive into several others (D, E, F, & G), and don't put ANYTHING in "C" drive that does not have to be there. Store music, pix, video, all accessory programs anywhere you want BUT NOT ON "C". This way, the machine does not have 10-tons of crap to search thru just to opperate itself all the time.
Consider it like an encyclopedia set. Do you want it divided into sorted volumes, or just the whole set in one 3-foot thick book? Which is easier to look things up in.

Or better yet , get Mandriva Linux (http://www.mandriva.com/en/download) it already has it and most of the other software for commonly used programs. Keep Windooze for your games though. :D
