Fox 10 news out of phx said they were 1000' tall cranes, seemed a little inaccurate to me.
A pair of construction crane towers collapsed amid wind gusts Friday afternoon. No one was hurt after the two 280-foot-tall towers -- on either end of Black Canyon, a quarter-mile south of the dam -- fell around 3:30 Friay afternoon.
Maybe 1000' above the river below???

Found this:
At completion, each tower will rise 352-feet above the roadway elevation and will carry six 3-inch diameter cables (3 each) 2,600 feet across the canyon

there were two of them that fell. i believe it happened at about 3:30pm on friday. the highway going through the dam is still closed and will be until at least tomorrow. according to the news, it may put the construction several months behind.

Having run cranes before (rough terrain type, truck type, 18,30 ton etc.) I had an opportunity to go up in a tower crane and did not like it at all, way too much movement for me!! :frown: I'm glad no one was hurt as I believe they used the cranes as man lifts to work stations on the site. NSF

I just saw that place for the first time last weekend! Did you see how high that new bridge is going to be? It is unbelievable, I wonder how they are going to keep people from slowing down to look at the dam. Anyways, crane falling is crazy.

Why are they building this? Is the Hoover Dam route ultimately going to close? THis is the first time I have heard about this bypass. Thanks

i think it is to relieve some of the dam traffic....not everyone that crosses the dam wants to slow down and rubberneck, thus causing backups......i'm sure terrorist shit has something to do with it too.

if anyone was really worried about that dam then they would have a higher caliber individual than the jackass security guard at the checkpoint that doesn't even stop cars. ANYONE could drive a car full of explosives onto the dam and take it out.

If the wind through that area can blow down cranes I would HATE to be on that bridge in a motorhome when it's windy!!!

Once the bridge is done, I cant imagine how many people will try to base jump from it. That would be cool to watch from the River :)

Must of been real bad, just went to detail a customers boat they had it in the water @ Mojave and the wind pushed the boat and tore the cleats off the dock. now thats some wind. Boats pretty screwed up too. But i heard the docks are real bad.

Getting new cranes are going to take at least 6 months and that is at best. More likely in 10 months or so.
This might push it back close to a year unless they can get stuff done with out the mounted ones.

I'm always on the lookout for Arabs renting houseboats at Lake Mohave, with dive gear on board.....just in case :crossx:
I don't think they are very well protected....maybe they have security cameras, the dam is the only place we can get cell phone receptions at Katherines....

They must have been built in China or someplace like that, I know a few years ago a big crane here in toledo came down, man talk about a mess, And A semi truck got crushed, And I saw that truck a few days later still there, I would go under that crane everyday, But my load was a cancel that day, thank god.

Oh forgot they are building a big huge bridge here over the river, and I think they were waiting over a year for the new crane to be shipped over for somewhere oversea.

They don't have to worry about the towelheads blowing up the dam, the towelheads are waiting for us to get done with the new bridge, so they can shoot a rocket off of it into the dam.

Wind was definately up this weekend.. we watched several boats drag their anchors and float onto the rocky beach at Crazy Horse this weekend.. SecondPLACE and I trailered our boats when the wind-waves were breaking over the bows by 930 am. He launched later for a channel run, I left mine to piss water from the bilge all afternoon...

Dubai is building like crazy right now... Let me find the picture and I'll post it up there on how much they are building. Cranes from all over the US have been heading there as well.

And this is nuts.... Check this out.
They are building these island like things called palms. Well fist, they are building a group of islands that you can purchase for $7mil (US) each. Next the palm things are these HUGE palm like fingers taht will have houses and stuff on them out in the water.
If you look at the bottom fo this picture, you'll see that famous hotel that is a fortune to stay at.

I watched documentary some time ago on that Island development you have pictured. It was a disaster and they had to keep changing plans and it cost a ton.The main thing I got out it was no matter how much it cost, no matter how much time it takes. It will go on because money is not a factor.

The two breaks in the surrounding 3/4 moon shaped barrier was never planned and can`t remember why had to go back and open it up but was a major engineering undertaking. The whole making of the reef was amazing. The great thing they were all American companies doing the critical portion of the job and still are that`s why it`s working so well :)
