I can't remember who it was that wanted some pics of the old wooden boats from Tahoe but here they are. What a great display of awesome old boats!
We got there a little late to walk down on the docks to see the boats up close but we got pics of what we could.
My wife and I decided that if we find one that fits our wants...bye bye jet boat.
Maybe like this one

Did this happen this weekend as we raced in Redding this weekend and all the way home to Orange County I saw a few of these?

yep, it was this past Saturday at the Sierra Boat Company in Carnelian Bay. Apparently this was just a "small" show....the big one is in Aug on the same weekend as Hot August nights in Reno. As it was, there were people from all over the country at this show with their boats.

I would love to own one of these some day--Tahoe is one beautiful place with clear water to use these :) Doesn't get much better.

This was the site of the 2006 Antique Classic Boat Society's Annual Meeting and Intl Boat Show. A Great Big Deal for ACBS members. Lasted pretty much the whole week.
Cas, the one your wife wants is a one-of-a-kind 55' boat built in 1940 by John Hacker for George Whittel, the guy that built the Thunderbird Lodge on Tahoe. The boat's named Thunderbird and has 2 Allison V12's in it. It cost Whittel almost $3.5 million to have it built in 1940! It's made of Honduras mahogany with a brushed stainless steel deckhouse, designed to reflect the lines of Whittel's personal Douglas DC2 airplane.
Whittel sold it to William Harrah in 1969 and a lady named Joan Gibb owns it now.
If you think the boat's something, take a tour of Thunderbird Lodge and go see the boathouse!
Before you think I'm some sort of authority on this stuff, I'm not...but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last nite.....
Actually there's a big article on the boat in last quarter's ACBS Rudder magazine (Yes, THEY have a magazine...)

You can buy a new wooden boat similar to those, BadBlown572 (Danny) owns a company that builds them Hogan Marine (http://www.hoganmarineinc.com/)

Cas the neighbor has 2 for sale. Both restored. I don't think they have original engines but both very clean. Someone down in the bay area restored them.

Mike,
CAn you get any pics and a price? I'd really like to do the restoring myself but if the price is right, ya just never know. My wife isn't super keen on the resto part, she just wants to gt in and go :D

Thanks for the plug Dreamin. :)
It is true. About a year ago we started a company that is building replica Chris Craft boats. Currently we have two models. Our 26' is based off of a 1929 Chris Craft Cadet. Our 20 is based off the 1954 Chris Craft Racing Runabouts. Both boats are 100% hand built off of the original Chris Craft plans. Unless you are REALLY familiar with wooden boats, you wouldn't know the difference. Actually all of the differences are improvement. :) It is actually a very time consuming and complex process, but the outcome is outstanding.
My partner in this company (R.I.P) had an original 1953 Chris Craft. He said that the worst part about it is that "every time I take it out, it cost me $1500." There are very few people who work on the originals and they are EXTREMELY expensive. The parts are insanely priced and very rare. The WORST part of the originals is that you have to "sweat" (soak) them for about a day prior to using them. The planks have to swell to seal the gaps. The new ones you can take right off the trailer and put them in the water. No leaks.
If you are serious about doing something, right now we have 2 (one 26 and one 18) ready to go. All have new power in them. If you want something custom, let me know too. Give me a call on my cell phone at 714-313-8757.
Sorry for the self promotion. ;)
