I'm new to the jet boat world & I need a recommendation
from some of you guruus. I'm in the bay area(Antioch) &
I have a 454 Ls6 w/ 990's for cylinder heads. The motor's
all stock w/ forged everything(9:1 forged pistons, dimple
rods, forged crank) & has never been machined. I was
looking at Morgans but they gave me some grief about
building it myself. The boats a 74 Kona 18' w/ a berkeley
pump w/ "A" impeller. Can you guys recommend some
places to look into? I'm looking for 550-600hp, I did some
searching, but was looking for someone who might of had
close to this setup to see what works well. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to HB...IMO, u have a very good set-up to put a blower on!...550-600HP without spending "serious" $$$ is a stretch...i would consider adding a shoe, loader, ride plate & place diverter to help gain some speed etc...also...a good set of OT headers & ign...u will get alot of replies/answers on what to do to ur motor to get that kind of HP...if it were mine, i would add the above items & run it & have fun...just my .02 cents

p.s. remember...Speed & HP costs!!!...how much do u want to spend to gain it???

454 with 990's? Go to S&S Automotive, San Leandro, CA. They will take good care of you and do it for less than the shops that are capitalizing off their name.

Thanks for all the info!! The boat has a place diverter
and we're in the process of moving the jet back a
couple inch's & adding a shoe/rideplate. Damn, it's
alot of work! Lyod engineering?? I've heard the name,
but haven't had any recommendations. I'll call S&S
also & get some ideas. I'd like to join you guys in
the delta area soon, but I think it's going to take
until next season. You guys have any ideas on a
roller cam conversion that works with the above info?

S&S is good also Top of the Hill in Livermore ($$) 550 HP is alot for that setup but with port work on the heads or different heads and a good cam it is very doable. Look in the gear head section for Chris Straub and ask him about a cam, he can get the job done. Also you could just build it back up with a cam and 100 nos and get your 600hp pretty easy, your components will handle a 100 shot no problem.
You may need to cut down your impeller so you can spin your motor up a little more and get to that HP. Takes around 500 hp to spin an A impeller to 5400. getting a pretty stock ls6 to make 500hp at 5400 aint that easy
