Not yet but I'm thinking about it ! The Doc says I have a herniated cervical disk..hurts like hell. He said a "block" will help. You got the same thing ??

If your seeing an orthopedic do yourself a favor and see a neuro surgeon. These aren't just any old bones your talking about. It's your spine holding your walking life in your hands.

It is my understanding that the shots only last so long and then you have to do it again.

Hi,
I am Upsman's wife. I have a chronic pain condition from the birth of our five year old daughter. I have had approximately 25 different injections in my back.
I am guessing your injections are going to be under flouroscopy (x-ray). I have had several of these type of injections. Definitely ask for medication to help relax you. It will usually be Versed which totally helps you relax and makes the experience much more pleasant. You will need to have someone drive you home.
Honestly, the injections are painful but if you have some sort of medication before, it REALLY helps. If you have the injections without medication be prepared a very painful experience. The procedure does not last for long but having a needle stuck in an area that is already in pain certainly doesn't help. Not to scare you but if you have a choice, again I definitely recommend the medication.
Afterwards, usually the pain gets worse. The injections did not work for me but I have heard of many many many people who have had great success with the injections. But again, you will probably feel a little worse for a few days afterwards and the nurse will probably tell you that. I always asked for medication to help get through the pain afterwards. Once the numbing medication wears off, the pain can be pretty bad. You will definitely want to take the day off and rest. And, you may want to rest the day after as well.
Everyone is different of course. It really depends on your issue and how you tolerate pain. I have a high tolerance for pain but unfortunately, the injections made for a very painful week afterwards.
Just a little background so you understand my problem. I started having pain about three months after our baby was born. I thought that it was just normal back pain from holding and rocking her due to her having colic.
The pain over the next year got much worse. I have seen a about 15-20 different physicians: chiropractors, neurologists, neuro surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, spine specialists, etc.
I have also had accupuncture, prolotherapy, used magnets, physical therapy, chiropractic care, etc. My pain is constant and always at least a five. It will usually get up to an 8-9 one time during the day.
At this point, I see a really great pain specialist who has done nerve tests. The tests revealed that I had nerve damage and the doctors believe I have irreversable tendon and ligament damage because it took so long to diagnose the problem.
I look at the whole thing like this. If this is the worse health problem I have then I feel lucky. We have a BEAUTIFUL daughther who we have been blessed with. She is totally worth every ounce of pain in my body. I have to say that we are done have children because I don't think my body could endure another pregnancy.
Hope this is helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm happy to help. It's been almost five years for me and at this point has just become a party of my life.
Holly

I have 4 bad ''herniated'' disk starting with C2/3 down to 5/6 the last is one is pressing on my spine 7cm I have had the block one time, we stopped the series because the dick head surgeon wouldn't call me back after the locals war off and the back spasums started, got so bad I could not even hold my head up. Also had the focker looked at all 4 of my MRI's he would have noticed that C5/6 disk started collapsing.
My famley Dr who is also a surgen had to ketch that one for the money curbing focking neuro surgeon.
Now it's a wait and see game.

I'll add one more thing. Not only do you want a neuro over an ortho but do your research and make sure your getting someone that is good. Just because they are a very nice person doesn't mean that they are good with the procedures.

Quit screwing around and have surgery done. I consulted both an orthopod and a neuro surgeon and chose the ortho. You might like the neuro. I put the surgery off for almost two years and realize it was a big mistake. After surgery, had immediate relief of most of my symtoms and took about six weeks to be back to normal. I had the disectomy with fusion. Good Luck.

Dr. Disney is great! 909-450-0369 if you need surgery. He will not perform the surgery if you do not need it. He is a neurosurgeon.
I've had bracial blocks (in my lower back) and a "cooking the nerve" procedure.
The blocks didn 't do much for me, but the "cooking the nerve" worked great! Please go to someone who does this "all day long" . Ask how many procedures they have done, the sucess rate, etc...
I ended up having a 3 level spinal fusion with rods. My back pain is better than it was, but I'm not abel to do everything I want.
Shop around, you wouldn't beleive the doctors that wanted to hook me up to a morphine drip directly to my spine (Yah, that's a solution  )
Good luck!

My mind is usually in the gutter, and I don't want to derail this thread... but I always thought "cervical" had to do with a different part of the human anatomy...

I agree 100% That's why after the first of the year I will seek out my 10th neuro surgeon.

I also had cervical fusion, discectomy and plating of my c-6 vertabrae and it was worth every penny. Prior to the surgery I tried P Therapy and medication without any relief. By the time I had the surgery my right arm was pretty much dead. Make sure the neuro surgeon is board certified and have an MRI and Ct scan. These tests will reveal ALOT!
Dont mess with your spine, it controls your entire body.
Good luck
