But if yours is done, let's see yours. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif

I have a 72 Spectra and it looks like Dans 76 Schiada in the pitcure. Did Schiada plug the Spectra? and if so why doesn't the Spectra perform the same with the same motor. I see the same in Superdaves boat. But Blownshiadas boat doesn't look the same, (By the way that is a good looking boat, makes me want to repaint). Did Schiada change the bottom? Have a '71 19 ft. Schiada, not as sweet as yours, maybe someday? Just a play toy when theres no racing.
Saw the pictures on the media center, who did the paint work? Looks great.

You need to ask Spectra Brent that question. http://free.***boat.net/ubb/smile.gif He will love you for it. hehe

To answer your question about the difference between the Spectra & Schiada bottoms.
Spectra 20-12 degree bottom
Schiada 21-15 degree bottom
Schiada 22 (thats the boat in the picture), I would assume its a 15 degree bottom.
Jim, your question, Spectra 20 vs Schiada 21, same motor base 454 LS6, same rigging stock, its most likely a toss up.
Most of Schiadas are set up to go fast, twin turbo, blown, etc. you dont find too many "stock" Schiadas.
Most Spectra 20's were sold to the public with your basic v-drive rigging and base 454 Chevy, 455 Olds, or 460 Ford.
So, Jim comparing lets say your Spectra 20, (most likely stock when sold) to a ski racing Schiada, totaly custom rigging & blueprinted bottom is apples & oranges. I have driven both the Spectra 20 & Schiada 21, both are excellent hulls in rough water & both ran mid 60's, but nothin to brag about. I would say it take lots of HP (700 to 900) & the right placement of the v-drive hardware to make either hull go real fast like 90 to 100 mph.
As for Schiada making a plug from the Spectra, my guess would be no. The hulls do look alike, but are different. I would say from the looks of the Schiada, the Spectra 20 was probably used as a model. The same could be said regarding the Campbell 20 & Spectra 20, they look alike but, thats about it.
As for which is better, well thats a matter of opinion. I do know that both Spectra & Schiada hulls were very succesful in off shore racing and speed sking in the 1970's (Schiada still today).
During the 1970's when Spectra was building boats, nobody had designed or built a better hull, not even Schiada.

Jim,
Its funny that you are curious why your Spectra 20 wont perform like the Schiada 21 with the same motor. Well I did a little research and you will be suprized at what I came up with.
SuperDave, you may not want to read this, Hehe.
February 1980 Powerboat Performance Reports
Schiada 21 (RiverCruiser)
Hull Weight(without engine) 2,000 lbs
Engine LS6 454
CASALE V-Drive
13X14 OJ Three Bladed Prop
HP 454 @ 5500 RPM
TOP SPEED (SPEEDO) 64 MPH
TOP SPEED (RADAR GUN) 64 MPH
FEBRUARY 1981 Powerboat Performance Reports
Spectra 20
Hull Weight (without engine) 2,210 lbs
Engine LS6 454
Champion V-drive
FEDERAL 13X15 THree Blade Prop
HP 405 @ 4800 RPM
TOP SPEED (SPEEDO) 65 MPH
TOP SPEED (RADAR GUN) 63.5 MPH
Well, with the same motor LS6 454 and the Spectra 20 giving up (a whole person)
210 lbs, its like I said, they are about even.
Who ever wants the articles, I will fax or send it to them.
I have the performance test from 1979 Spectra & 1984 Schiada with the 350 I/O. I could post.

THats what the article posted.
The LS6 in the Spectra was 405 @ 4800
The LS6 in the Schiada was 454 @ 5500
Maybe the 700 RPM's were the difference in 49 HP.

blownschiada,
We rigged a couple of the 19'er in the 70's. The molds for this hull is now at Howard Custom Boats, And I heard last night it (the mold) is for sale.
What do you need to know? They were a great GN and Ski race boat in there day.

I assumed the 21 Schiada was faster than my 21 Howard,(Spectra), since so many are used for ski racing as opposed to the Howard. After talking to a lot of people about it , I think the Schiada is just better in the rough water, deeper V. Also I have a friend with a 21 Schiada with a blown 540 similar to my blown 547 and so far he's not as fast as my Howard. Some of that may be "set up" though.

Your right about the deeper v-bottom on the Schiada 21, it does ride better in rough water. I dont think Howard promotes thier hull like Schiada does for ski racing.
When Spectra was in business the Spectra 20 dominated speed ski racing. Jerry Herbst, Vic Edlebrock, & etc. Then Spectra designed the Spectra 32 (right Burt).

Did anyone see the white Howard 19 jet with the 10/71 (Schiada 19) run at the NJBA races this weekend? It went 107 & low 10's on second pass SAt.
Where is the Schiada rebuttal, Schiada 21 vs
Spectra 20 v-drive?
