Jerry Hicks is # 9 in the 6 sec bracket. We are # 9 in the 7 sec bracket. Don't know the others. Too busy to keep track.
We ran a 7.052 ET @ 122 mph. We have a new driver, so put a pretty mild tune up on the motor.
Figured the drivers in the 6 sec class would just be too much for the first time out for him to deal with. Had some rain, but beautiful day today. Supposed to be about 76 *.

We got our Placecraft in the 11th position in the 6 second class. Had a valve seat problem and barely got it back together in time to make the trip to Malvern. I wasn't able to make the trip with Steve but have managed to help tune a little over the phone. First time in 12 years that I haven't been to SITC. Talked to Steve about 11:00 CST today and they were calling the first set of boats to warm. Pretty cool there this morning but the sun is out and as of right now, no wind. I understand that there was a little problem yesterday afternoon. Supposedly was announced that due to weather concerns that qualifying was done for the day then a little while later, boats were being called back to the water for qualifying. My understanding was that some drivers had left and others popped the top. Due to this there were some drivers that were kocked out of the field due to not making that last round of qualifying. Not sure of all the circumstances, but that is how the story came to me.

Also heard that there was only about 100 boats there which is a relatively light turnout for that event. About 30 of those were attempting to qualify for the 6 second class.

usually worse, but if there's only 100 boats, that would explain why the 6 second bump was 6.157 and the 7 second bump at 7.246. last year with more competition, you had to run 0s to qualify in each of the classes, but then the race was called due to weather. very tough racing, and if you're a bracket person, there's nothing else like it. in nhra prostock, if your name's greg anderson, all you gotta do is cut a decent light. if your name is something else, you hope greg anderson screws up. in the brackets, both boats can run perfectly every time, so it comes down to the driver; anyone can beat anybody else at any time. at sitc, there are no easy passes.

Well, we are still in after first round. Steve is doing his job, cut a .032 light and ran 6.14 to a .240 something light, didn't get the loosing E.T. That was Ron McCullough in the Flat Rat boat that we ran first round, he won the $10,000 about 5 years ago. Hicks went out first round. Lots of breakouts. Air is about 1800'. Someone got pitched out of a flat a little while ago but was reported okay. We may be having a pump problem but sounds more like a tach problem. He said it slipped to 8900 on the leave and pulled 8100 down the track but only ran 6.14. When he hit the recall on the tach, it started acting weird. I run a launch controller in that boat and it shouldn't let it turn anywhere near that. Had Steve do a couple of checks on that system but everything seemed fine. No evidence in or around the pump of anything going on. We'll see after next round.

Hey 2-R's...
Tough Competition and poor driving skills on my part contributed to my DNQ at SITC....!
Ran a 7.990....but needed an 8.00 to get in, so I packed up Saturday night and headed home....loaded up Sunday morning and went to Ennis so that me and Warren Johnson could console each other since he DNQ'd also!.... :rollside:
Hats off to Scotty "Seaweed" Seastrom for his NEVER SAY NEVER attitude!
Lightning hit the water Thursday night and fried the clocks, but he had a back-up system ready to go and we got two rounds in on Friday.
HEAVY....HEAVY rains on Saturday only allowed one round, but the got it in.
On Friday, John Wright sank his 6.00 outboard when the cowling came off getting the boat out of shape and knocking a hole in the left sponson when it settled.
I heard that the flat was the Fuelish Pleasure boat and that he was pitched right at the dock, but was okay.
I believe that Jimmy Booher won the 6.00 class, which after being top qualifier, would have paid him about $12,500 for the weekend.
Everybody has to go to this race sometime! Great site and a great race!

Not in Dallas this weekend. Both line and anderson got sent on the trailer for losing the tree.

I told him to tell you I got it apart but can't remember where all these little pieces go. I thought you could use a little humor. Anyway.......... The underdogs must of slipped some sleeping pills in their powerade this weekend, cause Conelly was caught asleep at the line this weekend too. That kid is usually nasty off the tree, but he don't make the HP line, anderson make. I don't like those guys, but there cars are nasty on the big end.

Gary is right about the weather and the close competition! Sunday the weather was beautiful! Sunny and cool a little windy. A lot of the boats picked up and broke out, etc.
I am amazed at house close the fields qualify at SITC! In the 6 second class I think the first 8 were in the 6.0's! The last qualifying session Jerry Hicks clicked off something in the high fives at a recorded 141 MPH 1000 ft. Any way you look at it that is one quick and fast puppy! A true pocket rocket!
Gary, nice to chat with you for a few minutes Saturday. It had had been a long number of years since we had seen each other. Tell your dad HI! and I hope he continues to improve and feel better.
Thanks Scotty for your hospitality and the National Anthem lap! I really got a chuckle on Sunday morning... it was cool, so I put on my 20 year old driving suit.... (we must have worn them loose back then) to drive my 27 year old restored boat and a guy came up to me and asked if I realized I was wearing Bell Bottoms! LOL!

so, what did HE do to you? it -seems- like he's put together a pretty good program that's been kickin ass on anyone elses for awhile now. connelly is the best driver out there, and beckman is gonna be good too, which says something about supercomp. put connelly in anderson's car, that would be somethin.

Dallas runs a BBC poweded hydro. As far as power to win.......... a decent hydro, or a jet or flat with bunches of HP, pretty good driving skills, and sometimes a little luck. From what I can see from this past weekend, Booher was just damn good.

Hey Garry,
As much as it rained on boats in the lanes, etc.... there were quite a number of boats having electronics problems on Saturday and I know of at least one on Sunday. So, there is the possibility a little moisture may have been the problem with some of the readings Steve was getting.

We pretty much figured something along that line. It ran about the same, although it did slow down a little in the run to decide 3rd and 4th place money. I think he may have tried something that the motor didn't like though that may have caused that. That's what you get for not checking in with the builder/tuner before making a change.

And get this; a female (Denise Hodges) won the 9 sec. class. In fact, there were 3 or 4 women in the finals. Sure would be nice if Seastrom had a better place to run and still payout good money. That 1000 ft. track had nearly everyone tripped out. Lots of good boats were there. The winners had a rabbits foot in their pocket.

You are correct about the female drivers in the 9 second class. Denise won first place, then Tiffany Helms (approximatley 20 years old - Barry and Cindy Helms daughter) won second and Magan Helms (17 years old - Chop and Paula Helms daughter) was third.
Richard, just curious, what do you mean about a better place to run? This was the 21st Annual Smokin' In The Cove and most of the people I have talked with really like the 1000 ft. track. It really helps to equalize the Hydros, Flats, Jets and OB's. Everyone has a good oportunity to compete and if you look at the qualifying sheets one can see it is one of the toughest qualifying races in the country.
What could be better than that?

sdba069

This is the first year that I missed after 12 straight years but still had a couple of our team boats there. I think it's a beautiful place. I have had a couple of encouters, near misses, with the pier sticking out in the vicinity of the left lane after a nitrous explosion and a fuel pump failure. Actually, in those instances, I came closer to a crash than I ever did in over 20 years of boat racing. That being said, I still love the place and would gladly go back again.

Stoker:
John Wright lost the cowling on his first run on Friday right in the lights. The boat got bad out of shape and when it chined left, the sponson blew out. He got to the shut-down area and sunk, but SDBA Rescue was on hand for the event and kept the boat from sinking.
Scotty Seastrom has built a recovery boat like the one that the SDBA has and we went out there and retrieved the boat and got it back to the trailer with no further damage.
As for finding another place to hold SITC.....bite your tongue! Shootin' for the mountain is what makes that event so unique!
When you to to Malvern, you'd better be on your game or you'll be going home early like I did!
Ran the 8.00 class and in three rounds and the best I could do is 7.990! Did not qualify! I believe that an 8.07 was the #16 spot in the 8-second class!
Does competition get any better than that..... I don't think so!
