View Full Version : A minor setback

Over the years I tested and played with a lot of setback on my boats.
My boat is a little heavy so I wanted more setback.
I had an idea on what I wanted but nobody makes it.
There are only a couple companies making 20inch or better and they do not provide enough lift.
Everybody thought I was crazy.
So UT hooked me up with the metal, cut it to size for me.
UT is a stud!
So then I gave RiverDave a call to put it all together.

Now it's time to take some weight off the side plates..... Slice and dice...

I been running 20" of setback for years. Don't have to use positive trim to hold the nose up. My boat is a tank, so all the help it can get, it needs. I did the same thing as you but only 14" with a manual 6" cmc jack plate.
If I can figure out how to post pictures I will.
What thickness aluminum did you use for the side plates?
Did you notice any speed difference?
How your water pressure?
Now you need to polish them up, or at least throw on some black powdercoat. Still looks good. Gary

The plan is to powdercoat it black.
Have tons of water pressure where it's at right now, almost 3 iches above the bottom.
Noticed a big improvement in both speed and economy.
If given the chance, I might even be able to run with those Stokers.

Are you threaded into the aluminum, or do the bolts go all the way thru to nyloc nuts? You know that aluminum "work hardens" and when you fly bye all of those other submarines, the stainless bolts will be working on the aluminum threads. I would go 1/2" bolts and after threading the aluminum plates, put 'an' washers and nyloc nuts on the end of EVERY bolt. Then you will know that you will have no problems "flying the friendly skys". Built quite a few brackets/ mounts.

Looks very nice, but I second MG. I was just looking at those puny bolts thinking "damn I hope he going to through bolt that.....) I know a lot of guys talk shit about it, but I would lose the stainless bolts all together and go with Grade 8, or at least put some pressed in steel load pins to take some of the shear load off of the bolts.

I put that thing together years ago.. :) I'm glad to see it's working out for you Barney! If you want any changes too it, just let me know I'd be happy to rework it for you, or make you a new one with a different design.
It might not be a bad idea to rework some of those parts with some nylocks on the backside in retrospect.. So long as you always check to make sure their tight though I think it'll be fine. If you want to take it off, I can rework it in a day or so, and add some dowel pins (for the sheer load ducky is worried about) as well as countersink the backsides of the inside of the retaining blocks to put nylocks in them. That stuff is all pretty quick all n all.

That is a nice piece... I am using almost the exact same set up on my Drill press...
