Is there a Stoker outboard drag hull? If so, how lightly can it be laid up?

I'm also curious what the range of weights are for the 20SST's......complete boat less fuel....

I am pretty sure there are no light layup Stokers aside from old ex mod-vp racers. You may come across one of those, but from what I understand, Al Stoker is pretty paticular about how his boats leave the shop.

Larry...aka Stoker100 from Scream & Fly claims to have a 600+ lb hull....don't know if it was a former race boat.

My buddies Stoker is the light lay-up hull. Not sure what the weight is. Apparently the original owner even wanted the small fuel tanks to keep the weight down. Normally they have 15 gallon tanks on each side and his has 10 gallon tanks.

Previous owner of mine said 15gal/side capacity....in reality only 12.5gal....
Could use the extra 5 gals with the thirsty Merc.
My hull and motor....w/o fluids is supposedly 1600 lbs......per Al.

Specific drag boat no the boat was not designed for drag racing. We can however lay them up at different weights using different materials. A standad totally bare no carpet tanks etc weighs about 825, old mod vp race boats were right at 500 but the decks were really thin, a low to mid 600 pound hull is not a problem with todays materials.

Tom, I know a guy with a 20' Stoker, I was told the bare hull weight was around 650 LBS.

There is one in Havasu (some of you guys know who I am talking about) that is approx a 600lb Carbon/Kevlar layup. You-te and I are probably referring to the same guy. Lets just say you have to know Al pretty well, or give the lam crew at Eliminator a lot of beer to get one built like that...

Actually we offer that lay up on all models now.

My 20 might be a lite layup The deck is thin If i stand on the deck it flexes alot. Im about 160#. I dont stand on the deck at all anymore I will slide on my belly if I have to be on the deck. It also has 11 gal fuel cells.

What motor do you have and what kind of numbers do you see with your setup? If you have a 2.5 it must run well into the 100's with a light layup.

Yes its a 2.5 but im seeing 85 with a 28 et at 7000.

Probably not a light layup then. I had an STV that bare hull weighed about 800lbs with a 200hp 2.4 and ran in the mid 90's and that was also with a 28p et at 7000rpm. Infact it is up by you a yellow and white STV with black like lightning bolts.

I calculate 14% slip, if your prop pitch is to spec. Seems like a lot.
It weirds me out a little to think I can go substantially faster in a 750 lb Glastron with a 2.5. You should be able to kick the ass of my bagged out 260.
Have you tried playing with different wheels and setups?

Unless he has a 2:1 lower, you are right. Having several customers with Stokers and having done some bottom tuning on a couple, I have noticed that with the factory bottom the 20sst tends to have a hump at around 80-85 where is doesn't quite have enough hydraulic lift the dry off the sponsons, and isn't quite packing enough air yet to hold up the motor. This glitch is compounded by those who like to put a bunch of setback on that hull, and further worsened by people who don't know how to properly use the tunnel tabs. I'll bet with some minor changes in motor height, setback, tab adjustment and weight distribution he could get her over the bubble and run just as fast as his old STV with the same basic combo.

Dave you would be better off with a 26 et and letting the motor spin up. Yours is a standard lay up, the deck is plenty strong down the center. If the engine is right you should be running in the 90s. The tabs should be a 1/2 turn down from level with the top of the tunnel assuming you still have the 4 inch jack plate. If you have a sportmaster you need to get the boat up and running with the shaft about 2 inches below and as speed builds jack it up until you are 1 inch above.

Well I have a cle and my jack plate doesnt raise the motor high enough. Im not sure what the tabs are set at i will check today. Ive been hearing the same thing about the speed with what I have I sould be in the 90s. It is a carbed 1996 2.5 200 I think I bought the boat from a friend of mosimo. He worked with Al when this boat was in the mold. If you can give me anymore info that would be great. been looking for a way to get more speed whithout buying a new motor.

DaveO I think when you first said you had a 2.5 most of us assumed it was a 260 or better, not a carbed 1996 2.5 200.
Just thought I would let you know the third week in May 2007, we will be at Lake Shasta. :)

I have a 25 in. mid I need to go to a 20in. mid to get the hight. speeds were better I was seeing 80 at 6200 with 2 people and full fuel and gear. thanks stoker22.

After the Blue Water Casino 300, a Stoker MOD VP hull sold, un rigged for a reported price of $2,700, delivered to IOWA.
I was wondering if this was Sandy Gilcrest's light lay MOD VP ormif it was Fred Bowden's?? (Fred Bowden wanted to see it, and see if it was the one he blew over at Havasu...many years ago....but it sold before he saw it)....
Stoker22...Thanks for the PROFESSIONAL ADVICE before the Enduro...Our Baker built Stoker weighed...1,600 pounds boat motor and rigging. If we went to Phoenix, would there be an Outboard Class??? We can go 87 with a CLE....
Any OUTBOARDER out there that would like to ENTER the 2008 Blue Water Casino 300, and would like any kind of help, feel free to contact me. I don't do much work...but I can help point you in the direction you need to go...

Does anyone know if Al Stoker has a degree?

Ron Hill
10-26-2006, 09:54 PM
Stoker has two years of College...He broke his jaw playing Intramural football and came home, from Oregon, where he was a Sigma Chi pledge, after having his jaw wired shut. He won Havasu in 1980 (I think) in Mod VP, with is jaw wired shut.
See Tom, Al Stoker doesn't need a degree, he is smart. He has a PhD in Boat Racing an honorary degree from the world.... I started Al in Boat Racing...C Runabout, Mark 30-H, that he still has, a Bill Boyes runabout...
Thanks for asking...

I have a couple more questions Ron.
So you’re saying Al went off to school, got punched in the mouth playing football, and then left school because of a broken jaw…?
Then being the smart fella that he is, Al found comfort and solace under your protective wing Ron?
Must have been a great relationship for you. With Al’s jaw wired shut you were always able to get in the last word.
:)

That's interesting, I heard Al was a hell of a football player if he could just hang onto the ball. I understand he also dropped the soap quite a bit in the mens shower room.

.I have only seen super stocks and K boats there. It would be a humbling experience to run the Stoker against either. There wont be any outboard class, you could run it down the strip during qualifying then declare your class. From my experience with running whackers at the strip you would be in thr river racer class,it is a "dial your own handicap" 12 to 14 seconds. It would be nice to see more whackers participate,Stacie and i are excited about are chances of winning the championship in the M/E class.Hope to see you there
