my uncle is telling me he is going to go look at this thing and it is only 6k. I tried to tell him not to get a jet and that he is out of his mind, but he says it has a BBF and runs 145-155mph and is a great cruiser. Could my uncle really be a jackass? :)

Maybe you should ask the guys in the jet forum about that.

Could my uncle really be a jackass? :) I would think a 2000 HP motor rigged up to one of those dual drive setups might do the trick on something like a 20FT tunnel. That's just a guess though.

It seems that the guys with around 800hp in their Jets are around 100mph, so my guess would be 1500hp, what do you think? :)
He is so stupid, I dont know who he thinks he is trying to fool. He said "It is a BBF all motor, runs around 145-155mph all day, great cruiser".
I think the guy selling it is just another delusional jet owner. :D

It took Bill Place a 4000hp top fuel motor to go 171mph back in the 80's, and that was in a 360lb 19' tunnel........

Oh, Harold Bruce's Blown Gas Jet was runnig over 140. I think he has just a tad over 6K invested.

Post there or I'll be happy to come here. 1400-1500 true hp on a well set-up jet should do it.
But I'm thinking instead the guy selling is targeting delusional v-drivers? Those with only a hugh tach on the dash and bogus "slip" factors to "estimate" their top end? The usual, "Not really sure how fast but I'm turning 6k so must be fast....at least 140 mph?" Or, "I'm not quite brave enough for WOT, but it'll probably do 170"
Etc.

Actually, 45-55 mph is about right for a stock 460 in a jet.

Now really....It doesn't take that much horsepower to run 140-155 MPH in a jet powered lake boat just a lot of beer and bullshit !!

I dont think harold Sr. has broke 139 mph yet. :D Last i heard he wanted 60k for that BGJ daytona and tow rig, and it still wont do 140 mph. :D sounds like a killer deal if this thing only costs 6k and runs 145.

well lets see. Back in the early 90's it took over 4000 horsepower, in a fuler to hit 160. So what do you think.
Your uncle and his crack dealer with the boat, really should get off that shit.

There is way to calculate this, but it's a very complicated formula.
Take the HP it takes to spank the monkey and add 2,000 :D :D :D

Well, let's see.
The Biz: 1250 hp = 134 mph
The Biz: 1500 hp = ??? mph
11 mph with 250 more hp? Ya, it could happen.

I think this is just another case of "the feeling". My neighbor's Maxum ski boat? dont know if it is ski or what it is for, POS in my opinion. He claims it runs around 65-70 with its 125hp merc. ha! I think the feeling of going fast on water is different and makes you "think" you are going faster than you are.
BTW: How much would it take for a V-Drive? I am sure we will get some answers quick.

V-drive power/speed info's notoriously hard to come by...with nothing but a huge tach on the dash who's to question?
But I'll give it a shot. 950-1100 hp? I'm thinking about a thousand will do it.
Ducky, any numbers to share with your new turbo setup?
Kindsvater, I checked out your new movies...sweet!
Didn't you upgrade your engine too? Or are you still 81 @ 6700?

Usually I get a rise. Seriously though, my posts are my honest opinion and looking for v-drive feedback. But I'll take whatever you guys wanna dish out.
I've spent a lot of time posting to a just jets thread about drive efficiency. I think a jet can do 145 with 1500 hp and a v can do 145 with 1000 hp. To me that's a clear indication of drive efficiency. But v-drivers don't talk much about speed or power so that 1000's purely a wag on my part. Is the difference solely hull drag? Maybe. But I think not.

There are lots of different variables you have to look at Jer. The first being what type of V-driven boat are you trying to make go 145? Is it a V drive tunnel cougar? Is it a Flat? Is it a Daycruiser?
What gearing is going to be run?
What propeller?
It will be difficult to get a flat to run 145mph with 1000. It will be impossible to get a V drive cruiser to run 145 with a 1000hp. An air entrapment hull possibly.
It takes a PGF 1100hp to reach 145 and that is with good air and the boat freed up the whole way without nosing in on the big end.

My Kurtis 500 went 156 two weeks ago at the CDBA drags at Dexter. I'm guessing that tune up was making about 900hp. Thats a prop, not a pump. I also wouldn't call it a lake cruiser

Guru,
Lot's of variables sure, but let's just say for an 18-19 foot light racer. Gearing, prop and impeller sizing matched for the best balance of acceleration and top speed. KZ's numbers in a well set-up carbon fiber 19' Eliminator Daytona...so for a jet 1500 to do 150 would be a stretch.
From what you're saying, for a v whether flat or tunnel, 1100 to do 150 would be a stretch.
I know these just ballpark, but at 150 about 400-500 hp difference for same speed? I'm thinking the reason mostly jet pump internal losses not hull drag. If we had two identical hulls with a good set going 150 mph, one a jet one a v, how much difference in hull surface in contact with the water. Now consider the interior surface area of a pumps intake, bowl and nozzle and internal flow speeds well over 200 mph...something a prop doesn't deal with. What kind of internal drag does that generate? What do you think?
