3/4(y-10) - 8y = -5y
I must've missed that day back in 7th grade..... :rolleyes:

I have a 6th grader and I'm just beginning to feel your pain....:cry: :cry:

Phat Matt

Let's try this step by step
3/4(y-10) - 8y = -5y
3/4(y-10) = 3y

YeLLowBoaT
10-03-2006, 06:36 PM
if they want to know what Y= here you go in steps
3/4(y-10)-8y=-5y
3/4(y-10)=3y
(4/3)((3/4)(y-10) = (4/3) 3 y
y-10 = 4y
-10=3y
y=-10/3

Phat Matt
10-03-2006, 06:38 PM
y = -3 1/3

You make it look so easy.... :mad: :cool:
Thanks. I'll probably be back. I haven't done this in years. The past couple weeks I've been able to help, but it keeps getting harder, and I'm too busy to go to class.... :rolleyes: :p The kid's tryin'.......he's better at English. LOL

Then we all got out of school and realized that you never use this stuff in life (maybe an ENG or Math teacher), but I am a SEC Compliance Manager and I stopped using that stuff after I completed the college Alg class and will never use it again. Unless the stepsons hit me up for help. I think when that occurs, yellowboat will be getting the PM's. YellowBoat Math Tutor service opening for business when?

I think we got these but I would appreciate your checking it...
#3) 4x + 3(2x + 1) = 5 - (3x + 11)
I got -9/13, but can't even multiply the fractions to check it... :cry:
#4) .2x - .32 = .04x + 1.9 + (-.6x) x = 2??
#5) 1/4n -2 + 1/10n = 3/20n - 4 n = -10??
#6 m= y + 5/x Solve for x. is it.... 1/5 (m-y) = x ??

3 yes
4 X= 2.22/.76( are you sure you typed that correctlly...... I can't see them giving that in basic algabra.)
5 Is it 1/(4n-2) or is it 1/4n - 2( thru out the rest of the eq)
6 is that M= y+(5/x) or (y+5)/x

Mandelon
10-03-2006, 08:42 PM
3 yes Woohoo
4 X= 2.22/.76 OK, That checks out
5 Is it 1/(4n-2) or is it 1/4n - 2( thru out the rest of the eq)
1/4 n - 2 + 1/10n = 3/20n - 4 does that help?
6 is that M= y+(5/x) or (y+5)/x
m = y + (5/x)

YeLLowBoaT
10-03-2006, 08:48 PM
M= y+(5/x)
(m-y)=5/x
x= 5/(m-y) Yes you can do that. here is why
x(m-y)= (5/x)x
x(m-y)=5
divide both sides by (m-y)
and you get
x=5/(m-y)

YeLLowBoaT
10-03-2006, 08:53 PM
(1/4n)-2+ ( 1/10n) = (3/20n)-4 Mulply everything by n
-2n+ (1/4)+ (1/10)= (3/20) -4n
2n=- 4/20= -1/5
n= -2/5

Like derivatives, find center of gravity on 3d planes, intergrals,......matrices, statics, dynamics, Lo'Hospitals Rule.....
Oh yeah, engineering is a blast. Solving for x,y,z.....f,g,h,i,j....all in one problem. :220v: It'll kill your brain!
