We have a 1977 21 foot DiMarco with 13.5 percent bottom. The motor is a 427 with a turbo 400 trans and currently running 6% gears with 12.5 by 15, 3 blade steel prop. Our question is: we would like to change the gears to increase top end. What would you recommend we go too and would you recommend going to a different style prop?

Also if you list what RPM your running now and what RPM you want to turn it will help.

Product Testimonial....(Spam)....I would like to say I use My "Super Duper Bearing Puller" EVERYDAY.. but that would not be true..But, When it's time to change gears, It's the FIRST tool I grab...We don't go to water with out it..Get one soon..They make Great Stocking Stuffers/toolbox fillers ...Battery's not included..No assyembly required..Not for use in Squirtboats..Family approved..

Dimarcobros,
We need to know, what your top running RPM is now.
What,(basically) is in your engine.
What is the high RPM you want to run at.
What brand is your steel 3-blade. :)
TOM..

Reminds me of that Lincoln car commercial with the boat and car paralleling each other, The wifie points out the boat and says look honey and the dude replies>>>>>>>
Heeeeah..."I gotta get me one a those"
I love that commercial.
Last time I was in Flordia that exact sinario happened to me too. I said "Heeeeah...I gotta get me one a those" The wiffie looks at me laughs, snikers and says "not a freakin chance" sooooooooo
I stopped the car tossed her to the curb, eek! mortgaged the house, drained the bank account and went and bought a brand new boat!!!!!
Seriously though, Gotta get me a cool puller like that>>> :D

BIG HUD,
Those Casale code #s on the bottom of the case, don't tell me what it is.(because I don't know their code)
There was some straight cut gears in the early 12 degree box.
There is also SOME, but not many straight cut gears for the 10 degree box.
All of the straight cut gears for the 10 degree box are race gears. Most are high ratio.
There is a 20%x 10 degree gear ratio that has not been made for a long time. I am planning to make a few sets over the winter.
Anyway, Tell me what is stamped on the gear set. TOM..

TOM (AND ANYONE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER)-
We are currently running approximaley 55mph and our main objective is to increase mph. Motor turns 5400 rpm. Make of prop is unknown. It is 12.5 by 15, 3 blade, rust included. Motor is a chevy 427 with 450 approx hp's. Motor is healthy with season and a half on it. Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.

I hate to say it but I think you need more than a gear and or prop change. Sure you could put some 12's or 15's in it. But if you do it will just lower your PM even more. If that's ok then go for it. I have a set of 12's and 15's.
It sounds to me like you need to up the power.

Anyway, I think we hijacked this thread. It's about dimarcobros gear/prop combination. So what do YOU guys think he should do?

That combination must be giving you one Hell of a hole shot.
If your engine is in the 500hp range, I would go on up to 22% gears, Start out in 2nd gear and shift into 3rd once your boat on plane,It will give you a good hole shot and alot of more top end than you have now. you could go higher in gear with more hp.
The prop I think is a little big, you can get somebody to cut it down, I'd try 12x15 first, but talk to the guy who you have do it, they may have a better idea on what the boat will need.

Should'nt that thing pull a two blade at a higher rpm? If you want speed, two blade. Pullin power and hole shots: three blade. Of course he would have to get those 6 gears out and go to 18s or 22s is my guess, but calling Tom would be better than a guess! wink
