How much more does cat insurance run than a V-bottom..
Lets say a 26foot Cat Vs. a 26foot V-bottom, both with 496HO power.
In the next few yrs, our 23 will be out and a 25-26 will be in. I was just wondering. We currently only pay about 50.00 a month full coverage on a 2006 boat...LOL :D

6-10 x's the amount. Depends on what you build. You may not even be able to get insurance if you never owned one and built a fast one.

Insurance is probably the biggest reason I'll never own a cat. I already shell out enough money every year to insurance companies. I wouldn't own a cat unless it had big power in it. Owning a cat that can't at least run 80+ is lame. Big power in a cat = huge rates with a more than likely a 3 month lay up. F-that. I'll just stick with my slow v-bottom.

2006 DCB Mach 26 with 496HO-- $1350 per year, no layup, Agreed Value. For me to upgrade to the HP525 when I was getting quotes was ANOTHER $2000 per year. $3350 per year, I think not...well atleast for now :)
In comparison, two Howard Bullet owners: 25 with 496HO, agreed value is about $900 per year, a 28 Bullet with 525 is about $1500 per year.
Bottom line--insurance isn't cheap, but definitely a necessity. Always be UP FRONT--I've seen too many people get dropped or have their company NOT pay a claim.

A Howard 25 bullet is deffinitely an option in the next few yrs...
Sounds like the cats are expensive unless you stay with the 496.

What's with all this "lay up" crap? If you can't afford to run all year round DO NOT BUY IT. Why on earth do some pay over 4K for 7-9 months of boating?
Our quote on 2 different boats yesterday.
Spectre 30' with 525 $2000.00 Agreed Value, no lay up.
Ultra 27' open bow with 525 also agreed value no lay up $1700.00
Apparently HP and length have alot to do with the cost. If I went 26' with a 525 it would run $3500.00

I never understood this either. If one lived in an area like Colorado or Minnesota, I can see the pros. Hell, I'll be in Havasu on and off throughout the winter.

From the looks of your boat...Nevermind, you cannot speak if your boat cannot break 100mph. Too bad you have that insurance layup, or I'd have to whoop you up again. :p
