I've got a 2000 on 37" tires, 6 inch,(deisel 7.3l)I pull a 26' gear box toyhauler and my 20' boat. I've pulled a 32' toybox also.Truck runs great,all stock.But it need to be regeared.A little slow up the hills.But will pull them.
I have a friend that has a 2001,that pulls a 32' toybox with his v10.Trans heats up.and sucks down the gas.He wishs that he got a deisel.I would wait for a deisel,Thats just me.

If your gonna use it to mainly tow . Go get it . My buddy has an f250 w/diesel and his tranny heats up too and yes it's got an 8" lift and 37's . The way I see it you'll either have problems or you wont. The hardest part will be sleeping at night after you buy it . So sleep on it .

I have an '02 w/7.3L PSD with only a 4" lift on 35" BFG's and it tows like a charm, much better than my brothers (stock) F250 w/ V10.
The V10 has better excelleration, but my Diesel gets much better mpg (8 vs.12= towing) even with the lift. I can't imagine what the rig you're thinking about will get.

on the test drive it seemed to be a little sluggish for sure it needs to be regeared.coming off the on ramp of the freeway i hit the brakes hard to test them and the front end kinda did a little shake deal.forgot to check to see if it had a steering stabalizer.truck has 90k on it so it is not like it is brand new so i know there is some wear but it rode tight.was just wandering how it going ot tow.had a 00 ford dsl 2x4 dsl lifted and 90k when i sold it never even had to put on new brakes ofcourse that is more driver then truck.

it was getting 9 on the test drive.i know that sucks but dsl prices are going to be higher then gas by a pretty good margine so add in oil changes and the short time i wil be driving it and it will be a wash on fuel milage.

You don't say what rear end it has....don't consider anything less then a 4.10 axle.
The big tires and 7" lift will really hurt your towing ability and put a lot of wear on the breaks.

I don't know why diesel prices will be higher than gas. Same maybe, but who knows for sure. Anyways, I agree that you shouldn't by a diesel because of the price of fuel.
But when I'm pulling down the freeway at 75 mph's and only turning 2200 rpm's, I smile thinking that this enginne will last forever. I hope I have this rig when I'm retired, if only to pull the boat a few miles to the lake.

i work in a refinery so i hear alittle of this a little of that i know all the refineries are making what they call ultra low sulfur dsl now and it cost more to make and we will be paying for that.i have had a couple of dsl trucks and i know they hold way more value then a gas truck had a buddy who had the same truck and miles when we sold them i got 8k more then him.i was looking for a little more towards any towing bad habits pulling something close to what im pulling.i had a suburban lifted a few years back i towed with and thought it was kinda squirly ride.

I've had mine for 6 years, 7.3 diesel with a 10" lift. I've run 38's, 39's and 40's on it. Lost the tranny at about 48k and bought a brand new one from Ford with a 3 year warranty. I also did the exhaust, a Bully Dog power pup, and a Banks Trans Command. It would probably be a whole lot faster if I re-geared it but honestly it pulls my 30'er up most any hill without slowing down and most of the time I can accerlerate uphill, so it has plenty. It was gutless before the Bullydog and exhaust, and the mileage wasn't the greatest, now it gets in the low to mid teens towing and I've seen up to 18 not towing, not that I really care what the mileage is anyways. I didn't buy it to save gas, that's why a bought a Ranger to drive to work.
Best thing about the Excusion is you can keep the third row seat and still have room in the back for 2 15's and storage. :rollside: It's the ultimate tow vehicle.

When I wanted to replace my F250 7.3 PSD, I test drove a lightly used V10 Excursion. The owner let me hook up my boat and up the Cajon Pass I went. Very disappointing when compared to the diesel. The SUV itself was an awesome traveling ride, the wife and I couldn't believe the room and comfort. But the power and 6MPG were enough to convince me to stay diesel. Good luck.

Boatnam,
I have a 2001 Excursion V10 and it is the best tow vehicle I have ever had. That being said The V-10’s on several year models do have a problem blowing out spark plugs. See the link. And look at Ford Trucks .com for this problem.

I noticed in one of your posts you asked if it was squirley at all, mine fells very safe. I know when it was stock it was really mushy but good bilstien shocks, ceramic brake pads, 15.5 wide tires, 12 leaf packs in the front and 10 leaf in the rear probably curred all the soft ride that Ford built into the truck.
If you're going to do the brakes (if it vibrates your rotors are most likely warped) I would suggest ceramic brake pads, they are well worth the money.

I couldn't drive my truck without a programmer now, you get spoiled. BullyDog, Edge, Banks, they all work and they all increase your mileage. As for the Trans Command, I don't know if it works but I haven't lost the new tranny yet and I drive it hard. The BullyDog also stiffens the shift points so between the two of them it shifts nice and firm. I still would like to put another cooler on it but I've never gotten around to it.

even though i am a chevy guy when we bought our current boat we used a friends excurison...the new boat was much heavier and our last and since i had never even driven a ford i was very impressed with the towing of the truck it towed very well and i was on s steep incline(14 frwy north) all the way home at it did 75 all the way home...i always said if i was going to buy a ford that truck would be it

yea the ride was good, compared to my dodge 4x4 8" lift short bed it was like riding in a car but it felt like when you turned the wheel back and fourth it would kinda roll over like a truck with a camper or how a motorhome feels sometimes.i guess becuase it is big and has a high center of gravity.

Yeah, stock it leaned to the outside in turns and felt really unstable. Now it's stays planted but you still have to corner like your driving a lifted truck with big tires. I won't be trying a slalom course anytime soon. I think it would reach it's apex and flip before you knew what it was going to do.
I never liked Fords but it's grown on me.

If people put has much money into gas mileage upgrades like this one http://www.gearvendors.com/
and Horse Power upgrades like this one http://www.whipplesuperchargers.com/product.asp?ProdID=1137
The debate over gas verses dsl would be mute, at plus 700 hp & almost 800 plus ft of torque with the Whipple kit on the V10 plus with a gear vendors over-drive unit getting almost 20 MPG those stinky dsl would be left in the dust.
