How good are these? I have been searching around and have not found many problems with them. I am kicking around picking one of these up. I like that it is a luxury car, but still has the muscle to get around town.
I am really into them right now...3.9 all alluminum V8. The Lincoln LS has received very high marks in occupant protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has rated the LS as a "Best Pick" with a perfect score in their frontal offset crash test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the LS almost perfect scores in its side impact and rollover tests. In fact, CNBC rated the LS as “one of the five safest cars of all time.”

I am thinking of 2000-2004 models.
All input is appreciated...Thanks.

dmon,
we have had an LS for ~ 3 yrs now and love it -- I think it is a great car and have not had any serious issues at all. In fact the only thing we have had to do is replace a window regulator (common problem on some of the earlier cars).
They were designed to compete with BMW and having spent considerable time in both 3 & 5 series I would say both performance and handling is very comparable. The LS certainly has a more modern suspension. Fit and finish is a little lacking ... just my opinion.
I am sad to see it go as we were really considering just getting another one in a couple of years. I have not checked out the Zephyr but hopefully it compares well to the LS.

That is good news. What year is yours and how many miles are on it?

In my humble opinion, If you want to be fast: CTS-V, if you want comfort (and faster than most) STS-V. I've had 2 STS's over 200K miles ('96 & 98) with nothing more than an antena change on the '96 and a power seat switch due to my fat a$$ on the '98. I've got 41K on the CTS-V and while it's fun, I am getting tierd of shifting gears. If you've got $$$ to spare, S-class Mercedes all the way!

I am not really looking for blazing fast. Mostly something comfy, with enough power and great safety, I also have to stick with my Fords. :)

My 9 year old would say that,"when you own a Ford, at least they circle the problem". I have driven the LS and find it a very comfortable car. My only gripe is that I have had very bad luck with Ford transmissions (both car & truck). That is why I have become a Cadillac man (until I can afford the Benz!).

My 7 year old would say "Chevys suck, it is boring towing them in at the lake daddy". :D lol.

Sorry to get off topic but, here's a pic of my son's car. He picked the front emblem (it came from his Mom's '65 El Camino).

we have 85k on our 2001 ls sport and have only had the rear window problem mentioned above (both of em) but beyond that it has been good. Depending on the roads you have to drive on, I would opt for the standard suspension with 16" wheels and 50 series tires if you have rough roads. I like our sport with 17" and 45 series as long as there aren't many potholes cause you feel em with that little bit of sidewall.
The sporttrac is a fun option to play with, you just about can't get outta control with it engaged, but of course its always funner to turn it off and have some fun. Oh, and get rid of the stock exhaust and put some magnaflows on it, picked up 3 mpg's and a little more kick, plus you'll be surprised how well the sound of the tiny v8 rumble is at 6 grand. :crossx:
Not a bad little family car.

I have rented the LS's many times. Nice car. Having driven the Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger, I would take the Charger/300 any day over the LS. Look at a used Dodge SXT Magnum or 300 with the 3.5 v-6. They seem to be as quick as the ls with better fuel economy.

same chassis and power as the T-Bird..36k mi on an '04 with no problem! highly recommended. Handling and power sufficient for me. I like that the engine is a 21st century product..I think is has variable valve timing etc. Very smooth and the T-bird will do 145 with the top down and the boss in the car!

We have 78K on a 2001 -- have gotten as high as 28 mpg on the highway but usually around 25/highway and 18/city.
One thing that I don't really care for is that the transmission is not set up to easily replace the fluid (which typically I would have done by now). There is a pretty specific process that requires an elaborate (in my opinion) leveling of the car with a tool slid over the tailshaft that must be done in order to get the proper amount back in. It is has been 13 years since I worked in a transmission shop so I don't know, maybe other vehicles are doing similar things but it seems like a PITA to me. That is a minor gripe though and nothing that would influence me one way or the other.
Ditto on the 17" wheels with 45 series tires ... you will feel the potholes. I think I am going to go with 50 series next time to try and get a little more sidewall.
