Easy to find $1 pax of Marlboros in any area with lots of foot traffic.
I don't smoke, but my friends do and they buy them.
They don't have any tax seals on them, and the small print writing is in Portugese/Arabic/Chineese.

Im not a smoker myself but have fought against the smoking bans.
While I may not like cig smoke I am against any bans that eliminate any freedoms or let them regulate our lives any more than they already do..
You give them an inch they will take that inch and stick up your rear.

Gwinnett County a part of Metro Atlanta banned smoking and many resturants and clubs found business actually increased as many non-smokers came back to the now "clean air environment".
I agree with the rights thing, but it's also a right to able to breath clean air and not go home smelling like an ashtray. Arrogant smokers should consider it a priviledge to be able to pursue a deadly habit not a right.

My province banned smoking indoors about a decade ago. There's no smoking in restaurants or bars.
Just before the ban, smokers were screaming bloody murder saying they were going to stop going to bars and restaurants, etc. Of course, they didn't. I doubt there was any noticeable difference. If anything, I think restaurants have more business now.
As far as a ban encouraging anyone to quit smoking goes, I doubt if even one person here quit because of it.
At work, Smokers still go to our back step and huddle around the door to have a smoke in -40C weather. The guys always wear jackets but there are some women who go down in just a sweater on the coldest days. They always look like they're about to die. lol!
I, personally, like the ban. I didn't go to restaurants for years. It didn't make sense. I'd pay to not eat in that disgusting environment. I know quite a few smokers who feel the same.
I doubt teenagers looking to pick the habbit up give a rats ass about the ban. If anything, it probably encourages them to start but I have no statistics or really much of an idea on that. All I know is tons of teenagers continue to start smoking. The entrance ways to high schools are always crowded with students having a smoke between class.

not being a smoker myself I liked it when santa clara county did the ban.
there's nothing worse than trying to eat food, and having to smell that shit.
(my parents have always smoked, and me and my 2 sisters always hated it)
another note: my brotherinlaw who owns restuarants, was always against
the ban, he states it would drive away business........... it didn't seem to...
On my first trip to Ireland, they had just passed the no smoking ban in
pubs and restuarants about 1 month before...... it was great-! damn near
everyone in europe smokes............
Bartenders did state that business with no "assigned" smoking areas were
hurting, while other pubs that had outside facilities were booming.....
--Sherpa ........... Now if only the casino's would do the ban........

Right after banning drinking, boating, any cel phone use anywhere at any time,(you know they cause cancer) they will ban all gambling, and the casinos will be gone.........MP

Most of the smoking bans came from public vote.
Now explain how your rights removal theory works according to popular vote?
By arrogant smokers I'm refering to common sense. The majority I've encountered don't have common sense thus the majority told them to do it elsewhere.
Drinking already has many restrictions aimed at safety. Boating is the same and it just might be time to take the "Priviledge" of watercraft operation from some of the idiots that abuse the "Priviledge" by mandating safe operations courses and even licensing.
The whiners that lose their "rights" are often the senseless that abuse their "Priviledge".
By the way since you are on Travis, can you honestly tell me there aren't a whole bunch of fools working on changing alcohol laws for the worse at Carlos and Charlie's on a busy weekend? :crossx: Common sense or arrogance?

This is choice, ban one dumb addiction, so you can better enjoy another. :)
I personally think habbitual cigerette smoking is dumb, but I also feel banning anything a large number of people enjoy is dumber. We all have things we like to do, that could be singled out by busy body activists for special taxation or regulation. As long a people only react to these things if their "own ox is gored" none of our hobbies or pleasures is safe from "The Tyranny of The Busy Body".

You caught that key word "habbitual". Good pickup. :)
I've been known to have a cigar or sometimes a cigerette by the campfire with a drink. :D
But even if I never touched tobbaco, I still wouldn't support new bans or high taxes etc..I just can't stand the idea of singling out alleged vices for such stuff. Just because I think something may be dumb doesn't mean I think that people who do it are. Hell, I do lots of dumb things, including trying to drive fast on water. ;)

we have had bans on smoking in San Louise Obispo for years
its great we don't have to smell some Stinky as smoke at diner
you can smoke at your own hose all you want
most smoker are very inconsiderate throwing there buts on the ground and blowing smoke in the kid face
as soon as you light up next to me at the beach you have taken away my rights
keep your stinking habits at home not in public

It's not a ban on smoking. If smoking were banned, selling tobacco would be illegal.

it seems that most people like the idea but dont like the way local governments are handling the issue...i was raised in a heavy smoker houehold and working in the foodservice industry i have had my fair share but when laws are written the way they are for this issue i must disagree.....like most of you said it will start with smoking and then slowly move to you cant eat beef on sundays, then no high octane gas usage during the weekday ...what i mean is a lot of stupid ass rules.....smoke doesnt bother me as much as the big ass semi-truck coming down the street with the black smoke puffing out of the stacks or the laidlaw school bus that just filled up my car with a thick ass fog coming out of its pipes

Where did that come from?
The word "ban" simply means to forbid. It is entirely possible to ban the act of smoking in many places, without making the sale of tobacco illegal.

So what. Close all the stores that sell it for all I care. Do you not get that it causes cancer? It actually kills people. It gives them cancer and then it kills them. Then as a by product it kills everyone around them. They smoke, their kids, family and friends get cancer and they die. Why would anyone want to keep these stores open? Oh yeah, money. The root of all evil. Has anyone thought about the money spent on healthcare? Keep one store open, kill more than a hundred, and waste a ton of money trying to keep them alive. I am sure that I won't get through to the smokers. They are too hooked to reason with.

there is a difference between banning smoking indoors and the city wide bans, isn't there? Meaning you cannot smoke within city limits? Indoor or out?
I am a smoker and have no problem with not being able to smoke indoors. I do not like smelling smoke while I am eating either. I do not even care if I can't smoke in a certain city. Just don't go there. Or don't smoke while you are there. Big deal.
Now, everyone go ahead and judge me and my character and morals because I smoke. :rollside:

Its been nice on Travis this month since all the public ramps are out of the water except Mansfiled and that one is barely staying open.
I keep mine in the marina so I dont have to deal with that and
the ramp there is still in the water as well.
Been going to Johnny Fins since its right across from me
but its hit or miss there ,some weekends its busy some
weekends its plain dead..

Now I'm not sure that any "bands" that come into Phoenix and smoke change anything. Bans??? Mostly have been in restaurants, yet allow smoking in bars with a physical separation. Funny thing, I don't smoke but my dad, bro, step-mom, and most of their friends do, and at our collective favorite restaurant in Mesa, Arizona, where we've been going for closing in on 30 years, I've eaten in the restaurant part maybe 2 times, even before the smoking restrictions. Better people in the bar.
Oh, and I really don't buy into the 2nd hand smoke thing either. I believe in genetics, karma, and fate. I've known people who have lived into their 90's who spent a majority of their lives smoking and I've known people who have died from cancer at a young age who have never smoked, worked in a bar, or spent any time in a bar sucking on 2nd hand smoke. Everything happens for a reason. ;)
Flame away because it's the internet and I can take it. :D

Wow, so you can prove that someone actually got lung cancer from second hand smoke??? One of my favorite waitresses has worked in probably the worst smoke filled bars as long as I can remember and she doesn't have it. It's called common sense and sometimes it even trumps a medical degree. :notam:

I can find all kinds of biased sources seeking federal funding as well. If you'll go back and read what I wrote, you'll see that I didn't say I don't think there are health problems related to second hand smoke and I'm still not a smoker, I just don't buy into the second hand smoke lung cancer argument. There is no real way to either conclusively support or deny any concrete facts regarding it, but it's a big scape goat for the medically inexplicable.
Been there with another condition and insurance companies don't pay claims with an "unknown" diaganosis/cause, so they gotta call it someting and blame it on something. You've been in a bar/restaurant where people were smoking??? Must be the cause. :notam:
The ironic thing is, people who smoke who throw their butts in the lake/river/ocean, or even out their car windows piss me off as much as the next guy. You want to burn it, deal with the residuals. I just don't buy the 2nd hand smoke lung cancer relationship.
