My v drive had a cute little flip top lube filler. It allowed gear oil to leak out all over the boat, so I have replaced it with a 3/8" pipe plug. Is this gonna work OK? I don't know if the drive has to be vented.

The drive should be vented. Are you sure you're not overfilling the oil?

If the v-drive isn't vented it will puke oil out of one of the seals. Happen to me, input shaft seal folded out and leaked Redline all over everything.

It has a 10-24 allen head plug at the correct level, but it drips out so slow I might have it overfilled. Definitely overfilled it the first time out, the clues were easy to read LOL. I'll put the flipper back in and check the level again.
Just one of those things I just have to learn about, this boat is a very different duck from any other floating toys I have owned. Thanks, you old curmudgeon flattie fliers. :D :D

rrrr - Be sure you are only filling to the lower
plug level. The upper plug is for filling.

Vent tube....what vent tube? My 10 degree Casale does not have a vent tube. I fill it until the oil starts to flow from the lower drain hole and stop. Put the plugs back in and I'm done. Can't say I've seen many boats at the races with vent tubes on the v-drives.

Nope. Neither look familiar. I'll go check again tomorrow after work though. I know there is no vent tube like the lower photo on the front cap.

I don't know if the drive has to be vented. If you had one of these on there and no vent on the top cap, it will blow oil out because it's acting as a vent also, I had one of those before and it puked oil, I put a vented cap on, no more mess!. Now, you plugged it up and if you don't have a vent, you will probably blow a seal!. eek!

make sure you have gear oil that has an additive that prevents foaming. if you don't it just might be the reason it is getting out of the vent

Well, sure enough. I went out and checked my v-drive and I do have a small breather. The things you learn......anyway. It doesn't look like a breather or vent tube, but its exactly that. It resmbles a small 7/16 nut. Inside is a small schrader valve that pops up when the pressure in the case increases. Now I know!
