Alright, I've been tossing the idea around of polishing the bowl, droop and nozzle on my POS boat. I figure since I can't run with the big dogs, at least it'll look good on the trailer...
Who's done it and what is the best way to remove the original PC that comes on the pump? I know how to do it and what it'll take just looking for the best way to remove the white powdercoat originally on it. Would it be best to just sand blast it?

polishing always needs to be polished again and again and again you get the drift.

i wouldn't do it......you don't need to run with them, the big dogs are usually on their trailers anywayshttp://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k265/squirtnmyload/00000036.gifhttp://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k265/squirtnmyload/00000036.gifhttp://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k265/squirtnmyload/biggrin2.gifhttp://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k265/squirtnmyload/biggrin2.gifhttp://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k265/squirtnmyload/biggrin2.gif

wouldnt recommend polishing unless u like repolishing every couple trips out unless you clearcoat it after initial polish

67weimann
11-05-2006, 08:27 PM
ok...yes to keep the brilliant shine, it would need to be polished constantly...otherwise it will return to a raw aluminum finish...kinda like the swingarm on your MX bike looks...k lets say you polish it and then shoot some clear over it? I was going to polish the frame on my old CBR900RR and that's what everyone said the way to go is...
Now, would polishing and then shooting clear over the pump hold up?

BrendellaJet
11-05-2006, 09:15 PM
Nope. I've heard the clear will turn yellow. Have it PC'd, they have colors now that look real close to polished aluminum...

67weimann
11-05-2006, 09:26 PM
Okay, now to PC it, do you need to remove the old PC or just sand it good?

AngryJosh

Just rattle can that shit... A little okie chrome and youll be looking swass and gain about 10mph.
Anyways, I dont know what you have to do to prep the surface for powdercoat, I would imagine they would prep it the way they wanted. But I just wanted to say I have seen the nice powdercoating jobs and they look 10 times better than polishing. Good luck

Beadblasting is the best prep...saves some money instead of having the PC's do it. my .02.

Have you ever tried to beadblast pump parts??? Its not as easy as you think and it doesnt remove all of the epoxy.
Aircraft stripper doesnt remove the green expoy. Since your so smart buddy, please tell us how to do it......

Chrome Powder Coat.....
I had some "Step-n-trim" tabs on my old jetboat (came that way), I had them polished along with some other items, they came out unbelievably beautiful, like 396's pump... They stayed that way for probably two months then turned to a "galvanized" silver color... :yuk: I just couldn't keep up with it... You have to be ON IT!
good luck.........

Thanks for the link 396...I forgot about the whole search feature...my bad...
That's kinda what I was looking for. I know the whole polishing takes a lot of time and patience...I've done some before. I wass just looking for the way to get that white and green shit off.
And still I can't make up my mind.

i was considering this too and i did some searching....
someone suggested to powder coat the pump with a clear  after you polish it...stating that you will never have to polish it again.
...for $200-$300 bucks to powdercoat it, it might be worth it.

I thought about the polished look for my dads jet drive on the Sanger. Then I remembered the hell I went through on my Imco drives on my Dominator. :skull: Needless to says the bowl just got fresh paint and I called it good enough.
My Imco's have to be polished about once a month to keep them looking nice. They were originally a satin finish and it still took 2 days worth of work to get them to a polished stage. I could probably give them a better shine with more wet sanding and polishing but it's a frustrating process.

wow mr. A-Z jet do it yourselfer, looks nice. I gonna start throwing props your way and put a link for ya at the bottom of my posts too! :D As far as busting your ass with stripper(if thats what it is in the pic) like that you should have just used 70grit aluminum oxide in a blast cabinet and call it a day. Takes the green off pretty quickly...you have to work at it a bit but not as much as it looks like you did with stripper. Too much work for me. My. .02

We can get by with polishing the pumps at a couple of lakes in our area, but then there are the ones that will turn the polished aluminum milk white the first time out. I opted for the simpler life and though it is not a shiny as fresh polished aluminum... I don't have to do anything but occasionally wipe it off with a towel . Below is a before and after I stripped my pump and had it powder coated with what our local PC shop calls "Near Chrome".

Yeah, i started checking PC colors through Eastwood and they have some colors that would look close to polished or chrome. They also have some clear so that you could polish and then PC it clear...
So many options and I can't decide... :crossx:

You can always take it apart and have powder coated later .

If you have ever seen the Edelbrock "Endurashine" coated manifolds, that same type finish is available from a company called Vacuum Metal Coatings (http://www.vacuummetalcoating.com/) in SoCal. If the pics of the Edelbrock manifold in their gallery are an indication, they may be the shop that does the work for Edelbrock. There was an interesting article about them in the December issue of "Rod & Custom" magazine. Certainly looks a lot more like polished than any of the powdercoats and probably easier to maintain than polished aluminum.

They have some nice stuff. THier stuff doesnt look as good as the edlebrock endroshine unless they have polish it first.

Some of the pics in the magazine looked pretty good. I was only guessing that they might be doing Edelbrocks stuff since they are in the same general area. Definitely looks better when polished first, though. :) I've been thinking about having a few small items done as a test of the process.

If your dead set on polishing check this out
http://www.sharkhide.com/index.htm
I polished my bowl and droop and coated it with sharkhide. It has lasted the whole season and still looks as good as the day i polished it.
I think it cost $45-50 bucks for a quart.

Im not going to do anything to it until i have too.According to the manufacturer it should last a few years. So far so good.I wiped it on and it was already getting hard,if i do anymore i'm gonna spray it on with an old windex bottle.
All i do is wash it off when i wash the boat.

Stripped the PC today and hit it with an 80 grit flap wheel on the grinder. That focking green shit is like indestructible...This was about 2 1/2 hours of work...now sand, sand, sand and then sand some more :crossx:
Hey 396, when you did yours, did your bowl have a lot of imperfections it it like pitting and groves under the PC?

11-10-2006, 05:56 PM
What did you use?
Do you mean to strip it?
I was real hesitant to go too aggressive on it so, I figured I would try some things to see what would work. First, I tried a wire wheel on a grinder...it took the PC off but not that green shit...So, i thought back to when I polished my swingarm on my CR250 and remembered using a stripping wheel thingy so I picked one up at Home Depot...The thing is similar to this...Stripping (http://www.discount-tools.com/sup-sbsw.cfm)...it wasn't super fast and was dirty as hell but it didn't gouge the metal and did a light scuff of the aluminum. There are still some spots I can't get to with that wheel so I need to get some other tools...
Have you ever tried the abrasives for the buffs? You know like these... (http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=444&itemType=CATEGORY&iMainCat=439&iSubCat=444)
