This weekend I am doing the last bit of restoration and modification to my dad's Sanger before he comes down on the 18th and I surprise him.
I am installing 4 cleats on the boat so he can tie it off easier to his dock. He had throat cancer and now has a trache tube in his neck so water isn't exactly his friend if he were to fall in the lake from trying to tie off from the bow eye or the stern. I actually thought about mounting them on the inside of the gunnel (similar to the passenger grab handle)so they don't take away from the lines of the hull. 2 cleats next to the front seats and 2 back in engine compartment gunnels. Cleats are a must for my fathers safety.
What do you guys think?

I had thought about that myself awhile back, just never got off my ass & did it. :rollside: Seems like the best location to keep them easy to get to for your dad while keeping them somewhat out of sight & messing up the hull. My opinion anyway. On the front two, if they're close to the seats, seems like it would be possible to snag something on them or jab an elbow with them.....

Recessed cleats would be cool but they are pretty pricey. Sunsation Powerboats was generous enough to provide me with a set of four 6" stainless cleats free of charge so that is what I will be using.
I just hate the thought of drilling into this beautiful MitcherT paint job.

I have little fold down T-style cleats on the inside of the gunwales on my jet. One set are just in front of the front seats and the other are back in the engine compartment. Really don't even notice they're there. ;)

Since it already had cleats on it (lovely blue anodized POS's), I'm putting 4 new ones on. You have a wide selection to choose from..... I'm putting old school cleats on that fit the era of my Stevens.

DScott, been thinking about putting some on my Cheyenne too.
I also thought about putting them inside the Gunnels, but think about a rope dragging back and forth across your new paint as it moves around on the waves & swells.

They do make some that collapse and are flush when not in use. If you have to do it thats the way to go inside the gunwhales.

MitcherT Custom Painting did the paint job on it for me. Everything else which included the seats, carpeting, gauges, engine and jet drive upgrades was all done by me.
I ended up going way over budget on this project but oh well. :rollside:

Scott, first of all two huge thumbs up for what you are doing for your dad. My thoughts on this are, with all the money you have already spent on this project what is another $250.00 to $300.00 bucks for a set of pop-up cleats? Next thought is most cleats even though very smooth have little pointy ends on them, of which if some rough water were hit could be hazardous to people if they were mounted inside the gunnels.
This is the cleat I will someday install on my Sprint

Here is the direct link to them stainless cleat (http://www.overtons.com/modperl/overtons/detail/pdetail2.cgi?r=detail_view&item_num=34759&fcat=). If you go to Overtons.com (http://www.overtons.com/) type in cleats in the search section you can find two pages of cleats with a few other pop ups as well. Hope this helps.

I really like the pop-up cleats but I just don't know if this Sanger has the room on the under side for them to retract properly. If I go with a pop-up design I would mount them on the outside of the gunnels where you would usually see cleats mounted.
I really like the idea of the flip up cleats that are posted on this thread. That way I'm not drilling any big azz holes.

Just for info. they make pop up cleats that are about the size of a 50 cent piece. I believe Dana marine makes them. You can have them powder coated or polished. They are convienent and not that noticeable. By the way are looks worth the risk of falling off the dock.

I'll bet that after all the work and $$ you've put into it that your Dad would love to help you install those Cleats. This would also provide you with the oportunity to actually put him in the boat and see what works for him, real time. Maybe he can even choose the style, but this makes having them on sight an issue, unless you have a selection locally.
Looks great, nice job.

you don't need to do that rod.....i'll just have my old lady hold it at the dock for ya......thats why i havn't installed em yethttp://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k265/squirtnmyload/grin.gif
even if i had em to use i prolly wouldn't with all the guys goin mach 1 to their trailers puttin out wakes......but i understand the need for them with your dad, scott. i'd prolly do the retractable on the outside
