View Full Version : What advantage does an outboard have?

I don't know much about the differences so I turned to the best source I know!
With most boats having an inboard motor, what is the advantage to an ourboard?
More room in the boat? Higher reving/more HP? More economic? Reliable?

More room and better mileage than a jet. Costs less to make good speed than a jet or a v-drive. If you use Klotz Caster bean oil it smells so sweet .
Not nearly as noisy as my v-drive and less hassles with the fish cops.

You can glue a 1" socket to the bottom of your blender bowl and have a mobile margarida mixer.

Takes about 200 more HP to do the same thing as my boat with the outboards...
twin outboards 600HP
single inboard 800HP to achieve the same results....

Plus you can run at least 90% throttle until you run the fuel tanks dry.
Don't have to change engine oil. :)
Don't have to stand on your head to change the damn plugs! :crossx:

The BRP Evinrude E-TEC is a clean burning two stroke; less emissions than most 4 strokes and better economy than the old carb motors. Merc has one too, but the name eludes me. :boxed:

They're the shit but the general public wants 4 stroke so we're pretty much hosed into more and more 4 strokes as time goes on.

When you add about 1,000# extra for all that iron, I would say that would be a close estimation. :crossx:

I hate to disagree with you Tom, but look at most of the bassers. I would guess that it would be 90% or higher green 2 strokes.

Going to have to agree with everyone.....and add a few.
When your stuff breaks and they ALL do/will the odds of both O/B's going at the same time is really low. Wait 'til you bust that sterndrive 25 miles from nowhere with the single I/O.
No more "heavy" winterizing.
No more crawling around in the bilge!
No more noise police.
Keeps the mosquitos away............

and if you support mercury, jobs stay in America. Fondulac just laid off a few hundred because of better techniques. The only thing I can think of is computer robots, like autos. I am a jet boat guy. I still support you guys and agree with most of what was said.I like my frends old bridge ports but the new stuff changes so fast. The gurus have a hard time keeping up.

yes I am...
The F26's with 800's are running 110 a little more
the F26 with twin 300's are running 108 to 110
so for a few more miles per hour NOT many more the 800 will get you there

Weight and it's placement,is a major reason outboards are so fast for the available power.BT

That's awesome. 2 strokes are so simple and so efficient at what they do, it would be a shame to ditch the technology without good reason.
It's tough to imagine a 4 stroke putting out 400 hp at 10000+ RPM with an engine that weighs about 175 lbs and an entire drive train that weighs about 350 lbs. It just ain't going to happen any time soon.

1) You don't have to check the oil....
2) You don't burn yourself with headers and shit!
3) You don't have to pass a Vehicle Inspection before hitting the water ways!
4) You don't have to pretend to be cool.
5) You don't have to have a Pep Boys Credit Card :yuk:
6) You can boat along time on 20 gallons of fuel
7) You don't have to worry about a backfire causing your passengers to be skinheads in a blink of an eye.
8) GETTING ON THE WATER AND SMOKING A CARBOAT...PRICELESS.....need I say more?..........( . )( . )...................

Just buzzed to the bottom. But an OB will last say 10 years and then rebuild time. IO 5 years if your lucky. Don't sit on a turn for a long time or the oil what there is of it will go to the outside of the pan. Ya like thats away from the pump. KABOOOM! I've seen it happen, jet boats most of the time. It's all in what you like, me OMC outboards. I have one sittng in a shed in Upstate NY, oh for about 25 years now.

I was told in the 800 range. Still at 600 it will take a big boat to make it float.
