View Full Version : Anyone else have sleeping problems?

Ever since I took over the company, I haven't really been able to sleep. Every night, I cant fall asleep until 3:30 AM, then up for work and at it by 8:30.
Last night, tried to go to bed at midnight, and laid wide awake in bed until that magical 3:30 AM again.
I cant shut my mind off about anything, so I will come to the computer, and then mess around on the 2-3 forum boards I go on.
I dont want to take any pills (RX), and getting drunk is out of the question.
This post stems from the problem as well because I am trying to make myself tired.
Anyone else have this issue?

Yes, me. Sometimes I can't sleep until about 2 am and then I barely make it outta bed by 6 am to get to work. It sucks. Then it finally catches up to me and I end up crashing out at 9 pm a few nights later. It's weird. I guess it doesn't help that my bf works nights so I'm here alone.

It isn't stress. Well not most of the time. I just cant turn my mind off for coming up with new ideas/programs/products. I work for family, so I'm cheap.

If I can't sleep I just turn the tv on in my room and get in bed. Set the sleep timer for 1 hour and I'm usually out before the tv timer turns it off.

I work nights, so I am up all the time when everyone is asleep. I have the same problem during the day though.

I work from 2300-> noon and try to sleep in the afternoon and evening. Doesn't work. Dr will not prescribe ANYTHING. It's a bitch but as I only work 2 days then off guess I'll live. When I try an push the Doc, he tells me to try 'Melitonin" (sp). I'd rather try Topless and a couple valiums. lol :D

Take 2 Tylenol PM and also take a pad of paper and write down all your ideas and things that are on your mind. I know it sounds kind of stupid but it worked for me.

I deal with the same issue....insomnia runs in my family. and it looks like my mom passed it on to me. I usually just deal with it, but occasionaly I will take a sominex or Tylenol PM. when it gets really bad, I will hit up the RX.

I posted a thread just like this a few weeks ago....I tried everything to sleep and then I have a rockstar to wakeup...pathetic...I could lay down for bed @ 8pm and I wont sleep until like midnight or later.....toss and turn all night..my mind is just going off about everything...
Someone posted a sight about a hypnotist and a free sleeping CD. The music sounds relaxing and she is suppost put you in a trance. Alot of good reviews on it after about a week or two of listening to it. I downloaded it, but yet to try it. Maybe I will try it monday.

You just described my almost every night. TV in bed will get the wife up and  she does not have a sleep issue so she can't relate.
My kids don't sleep well either. They get up and down...If I am asleep they wake my ass up (intentional or not) and I can't get back to sleep. Wife just turns off the switch. Amazes me.
I am self-employed contractor with 4-5 employees and it seems I can't turn my game off the past couple of years and just sleep like a normal person. Gears in the head are always turning.
I hate it. Late-Night TV sucks. I read forum after forum, do work related crap, etc. until the wee hours. Sex - sometimes makes me tired...but mostly I am more awake.
Can't take any sleeping meds - I have an irregular heart beat and that stuff (along with caffeine) is a big NO as the meds I take for that I do not want fuke'd with.
So...such as life. I sleep better out of Dodge in the desert (at the river or jeeping around) so I look forward to the Motor home travels more and more but the Biz makes it hard for me to leave.
And yes I also know how others feel....
I wonder if LHC...greeter at Wal-Mart...isn't such a bad idea?

Had (and sometimes still do) the same problem. It's the job... Hope it gets better for you. My sleepless nights have gotten better in the past 12 months.
Just remember, you can't do anything about your job while you are laying there awake in bed.

Meds won't really help. Dr gave me some Lunesta. I'll take it, fall asleep then wake up 4 hours later and can't fall back asleep. They also leave a bad after taste for a couple hours the next day.
I too can fall asleep quickly, but have trouble staying asleep. Same issues as you, not so much stress, but work, new ideas, improvements, issues and concerns.
Reading helps put me to sleep. Good diet and some exercise will also help. Good luck

I am not an herbal remedy guy but to my amazement melatonin really works for me. Don’t take more that 1.5 mg or it can keep you up. Take it about a 1/2 to an hour before going to bed. Find it in the vitamin section of any grocery store.
That will be $30 co-pay :D

Same deal here. Not saying this is the only solution, but it definitely worked for me...
Get rid of the computer at home. It is engaging, and allows you to blend work and home too much. I would wake up at 2:30 and just go hit the boards and the CAD program. Ususally both. I would hit up the Solidworks so that I could get ideas out of my head, and the forums in between different aspects of the projects. Next thing you know... it's on to web sudoku, solitaire and others.
It was just too easy for me to get up and work. That, in it's own way adds a lot of stress. It isn't traditional stress like money and relationships, but it makes it's own weather when you can't sleep. Then, you start getting stressed about not being able to sleep. Viscious cycle.
Fun fun fun... I am there with you.

Sleep is important. You will burn yourself out early if you dont' get enough. It can lead to other problems for sure.
Get up early and make sure you are hitting the gym or at least a jog/walk around the neighborhood before the sun even comes up. Get up at 5:30. Make sure you put your all into every day and learn to leave work at work. When you come home knowing you've done all you could during the day, you can feel satisfied.
If there are problems today, they will still be there tomorrow. Handle the worst first, and the day gets easier. Make a list every morning and cross the items as you go. Set the sites reasonably. I used to make a long list and then be frustrated I couldn't get it done. Hmmmm, make a shorter list then you can get it all done and feel good about it.
Dont need to get drunk, but a nice glass of Merlot is good for you and will help you relax a bit without interfering in your sleep patterns.

Being a shift worker... I feel your pain..
You're body is now used to going to sleep at 03:30... the whole Circadian rythem deal.
The biggest tip I tell people new to shift work that have problems sleeping is have a routine and stick to it. It works for 8 to 5ers as well... go to bed at the same time every night, eat dinner at the same time, excersize at some point during the day, knock of the energy drinks in the afternoon and evening... and yes, if you do drink, knock off the booze in the evening... get up at the same time everyday and then follow a routine in the morning... everyday. It helps, trust me.
I don't ever recommend sleep aids, but I know that some of my people take them to get to sleep... maybe a Tylenol PM for a couple days to get you back in the mode of falling asleep at a more normal hour.

Hate to add a serious note here, too many smart ass reply's. But I had the same thing for many years, used to put Johnnie Carson to bed, now Jay Leno. But still got up early AM and to work. Never had any health problems, no stress, and the lack of sleep was never a problem. Would catch up on occasion by sleeping a full 8 hours. Recently tried one of those PM pain relievers, and it works for me. Now go to bed around 11 and up by 7. Above advise is also good, no coffee past noon, no booze at nite (I hate that one), and only read ***boat on the computer...

I've heard about keeping a note pad by the bed so when you have an idea you can write it down then try to go back to sleep. For innovators that was supposed to be great way to remember ideas and get sleep.
Good Luck.

i work a roatating 12 hour shift, meaning i go day to night to day to night every shift which is 2 days or 3 every other weekend one night one days.you can imagine that would screw up your sleep pattern a little.i leave for work on nights at 3:30pm and get home around 6-6:30 next day bed by 7 not uncommon to be up by 9 never sleep past 10.it feels kinda like im hung over all the time.have taken all the over the counter meds with nothing working, doc will not prescribe scripts.been doing it 20 years so i guess i can do it another 12,but since i hit 40 i can really feel it wearing on me.

I hardly drink booze, maybe 2-3 times a year at the most.
I dont drink caffeine. About 11 months ago, I mad ethe switch to diet soda. I was drinking about 7-9 cokes a day sometimes. Never less than 4 in a day. So i switched to diet, and drank just as much. Then I quit them cold turkey one day and all I ever drink now is water. I will have a Sprite on a rare occassion, and never more than 1 every other day if I do have 1. So, caffeine is out of my system totally.
Um, work out.... yeah, that is umm, I dont do that.

Good Luck.
There are so many good points.. sifting through them and living through them.
If you are an innovator or a business owner.. the note pad really does work.
Next... Realise that worry does not change anything... only action can. As Mandolin says... get up and ... ummmm.. make something of your day. I think that is what he said, well what ever he said it was a good point.
Laying in bed will not change anything. Write it down at night so you do not have to try to remember it in the morning. Make your list for the day so that you can accomplish things. Maybe make a list A and B so that you can get all of "A" done and if you have time then move on to "B".
I think that there is a saying...."Only worry about the things that you CAN change... and do not worry about the things that you CAN NOT change"...
Stress/Worry... it will kill you. Learn to Prioritize... learn to say "Oh Well!!!!" and learn to say "NO"!!!!! That is another important thing.
The drinking at night only runs your blood sugar levels up.... and MAKES you wake up in the middle of the night when you blood sugar levels crash... If anything, try the herbs mention in this thread and if that does not work try the over the counter stuff.
I have heard from so many sources that trying to get the regular sleep schedule is so important. Oh and a Doctor told me that using your bed for more then sleeping and sex is wrong.... meaning that trying to watch TV in bed to fall asleep or reading in bed.... it is wrong and it ruins the reason for having a bed. ... I did not say that... I was told that.
SO take what you want..... I wish you luck. And I hope to hear good news from you in the future.

For all of you who are having trouble sleeping, do the Melatonin.
It is a substance which your body produces naturally, but produces less as you get older. It's what makes you fall asleap when you lay down. As someone stated above, 1.5 mg is sufficent. I take half each evening. It sure has helped me. Give it a try.
