When I saw the post below I freaked out and called the number. It is true! But, it has been post-poned until Jan 3rd 2007, but that is still desert season!! They should do this work during the summer time!!! Please call the number at the bottom and leave your message recommending they close the road during the summer....
Thousands take this road every weekend so If you normaly don't take this route call. After Nov. 3rd all the other routes will be congested

From: San Diego Off Road
Subject: Road to Ocotillo Wells to be CLOSED - IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED
If you do your off roading in Ocotillo Wells
please take a few minutes to read this
email, make a phone call and then pass
it along to your off road friends.
Cal Trans has plans to close SR78 from Scissors Crossing (S2)
to Yaqui Pass beginning this Monday, November 13 for eight weeks.
To get to Ocotillo Wells will require a huge detour
up San Felipe Road, through Ranchita, onto Montezuma
Valley Road and into Borrego Springs,
some have estimated an hour long detour.
Call them today to POLITELY express your displeasure
at closing this road at the busiest time of the off road season.
619-688-2556 or 619-688-6670.
They are meeting TODAY to decide if they should
attempt to reschedule it with the contractor. They said they
have only received a few calls and are paying attention
to whether people are concerned about this or not.
Please call right away to discuss the hardship for thousands
of off roaders traveling that path and encourage your
friends to call too!
If you don't get this in time to call on Wednesday,
call anyway, because they need to hear from us.
We suggested they wait until after President's Day weekend or
even Easter to do this.
Thanks!

Last season they had a bunch of those traffic counters on those roads. They know there is alot of winter traffic.
I spoke to the owner of Desert Ironwoods and he said its gonna kill his buisness closing the road during the winter.
