View Full Version : Looking at getting a Pantera

I've always loved the look of the DeTomaso Pantera, but never thought that they were affordable to a man of my meager means, but hey I was wrong. I've noticed that unlike the other expensive Italian exotics, Panteras increase in value if you update them and make changes for the better, and no body cares about matching numbers. The engines are good ol' American Ford 351's....And another thing, all Panteras that were imported to the US before 1974 are smog exempt in California! (I know, so are all cars).
I know that these cars are 30 to 35 years old, but I've seen really clean rebuilds going for $50,000 - $60,000. I know that sounds like a lot for a 30 year-old car, but what other Italian exotic can be had for that much? Jeez, early Camaros and Corvettes are going for that, and you can't even touch a Shelby Mustang for that.
Anyone out there in ***boatland that has a Pantera that would want to pass on some things that I should look for before getting excited about a particular car?
Thanks,
GB

The first Pantera I saw was at a car show on Euclid in Ontario. I was about 10 years old or so.
I thought that car was bad ass. All black, polished engine and transaxle.
I wanted on for a long time, I figured I would paint a hotrod all black and that would have to do.

The Pantera has always been my favorite affordable exotic hot rod. Being a chevy guy, I always thought it would be neat to install a 427 small block in one. When I was a kid my dad had a Lotus Europa which seemed exotic then, but underpowered.

One thing... most owners swap out the knock off wheels for new 5 lugs, the older wheel size is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to try to buy tires that have any decent speed rating. So if you find one with the orig wheels be prepared to spend about 2500 on tires. I have dirven a few and been scared shitless in one. I would love to own one. One more thing, if you find one with a prob in the trans-axle, run away, run away very fast. When they 1st came out the transaxle cost more then the rest of the car. they are still about 10-15k to replace if they go bad.

He's been doing the club thing for about 10 years now.....I see you are in So Cal. This is basically the Pantera capital of the US. Send me a PM if you want to talk.
I know which of the local aftermarker dealers are good, bad, and ugly.

We just picked up a 71 pushbutton (the rarest of the imported models) as a total resto....
The yellow 72 is a fun car and gets tons of attention.
Look for it around Sacramento, CA.....

When I was a little kid, a neighbor kid's dad had one sitting in the garage... I never saw it move in the 8 years I lived in that neighborhood. He had it covered and of course we pulled the cover off once in a while to peek at it -- it looked unbelievably clean but I can only imagine how deteriorated things must have been under the hood after sitting all that time... Always wanted to pull that thing out, fire it up, and take it around the block a few times.

The Ford dealership in the Riverside auto center used to have Elvis' yellow Pantera. I saw the title transfer with Elvis name on it......it even still had the bullet hole from when Elvis shot it in one of his famous temper tamtrums.
I don't know how much or if it's still there.

My friends dad had one when we were 14. We used to take it out all the time until he (my friend) lost it around a corner and hit a curb. The cops showed up at his house a couple of minutes later and accused us of driving it. We denied it and they came back later when his dad was home. His dad took the blame and said it was him that was driving and that he lost control of the car. After the cops left, he turned to us and said...you guys are looking at about $600.00 for a new wheel and tire.

What I've found out in the short time I've been looking is that some Pantera owners are spending big bucks to update and rebuild these cars from
$50,000 to over $100,000, then want something else, get divorced or just lose interest in it. I'm looking for a car that has been rebuilt, updated, and is done in a tasteful manner - no Pantera graphics on the rocker panels or stripes and racing numbers on the hood and rear deck, or a huge rear wing. An original interior is pretty crude if you've seen one. The updated ones are so much more comfortable, functional, and easier on the eyes.
If I can find one that has recently been gone through, updated and road ready for between $50K - $60K, then I've got a pretty much brand new Italian exotic car for a quarter of what a Ferrari goes for; and gets the same oohs and ahhs at about the same price as new Vette and this one won't deprciate like a new Vette.
