i have found the best way to do it if you dont have the pump out of the boat is to stick a steel rod through the h bar in the ujoints,so the motor wont spin and if you donnt have a impeller wrench, then use a pipe wrencha big one so you have some levridge, and i dont remember but i think that it is a left handed thread, but try it the right way first!,

I treid a wrench and heat... it did not work.( map) tried the candle trick and lots of diffrent kinds of oil I finally got out the grinder and very carfully cut it off.
you do know its reverse threads right?( have to check)

I used a pneumatic impact gun on mine. Worked like a charm.

If you have the steel nut, carefully cut it off, because it's gonna save you lots off money, not having to buy a new shaft. If it's really on there, it's just going to take the threads right off, when you attempt to heat and turn it off.

It is a standard right hand thread. Turn counterclockwise to remove.
I had to grind mine almost to the threads. Then I gave it a whack with a hammer and chisel in the direction of removal, then it came loose. I need an impact gun with more reverse torque!

That would be the best way if you don't have one of thesehttp://s144.photobucket.com/albums/r162/4trax67/Boat%20parts/th_Pumptools13.jpg
I think they call it a dead blow wrench. It works awesome.

i generally have to use a big azz cheaper pipe. i made my nut wrench outta 1/2 inch plate steel, i kept breaking my big crescents. but i have had to use the ole cut-off tool on them before, it sux.

If it's been on there for a long time, save yourself the trouble and grind it off as suggested above. Just be careful not to get into the shaft's threads while grinding it.
Otherwise, you'll fight it for days and take the chance of damaging the shaft, the threads and the impeller(if you are wedging the impeller to hold the shaft, don't laugh I've seen it done!).

You will need air. I tried with a regular impact but it wouldnt budge.

As said a couple times already, save the time and carefully cut it off. I spent a week fooling with oil and heat and 4 foot pipes on a wrench and finally said piss on it and cut it off.

We have some of those wrenches laying around our shop. I found one out in the yard one day. They used to be used by the ironworkers in days gone by. Now they use modern day tools! ;)

Just take it over to Timm's and have him impact it off for you. He even has the deeeeeeeeeep well socket to fit it. Bring it by when you come to get that thrust bearing from me.

When I was a young man, we used those wrenches in the shipyards. We called them 'slugging wrenches' because you'd put the on the fastener and slug 'em as hard you could to get the rusty fasteners loose.
I don't know that I'd want to be sluggin' on my pump shaft though.
