A friend of mine were out about today, and stopped by a Stingray Boat dealer.
The guy we were talking to (nice guy btw) told us that the little 195fx model with the 4.3 has been tested to do over 59mph on GPS per the magazine Trailer Boats. He said the 22ft will do over 60. The Stingray site doesnt really offer exact numbers except on a graph that is hard to read.
That just seems crazy. What do you guys think?
BTW, that little 19ft boat with a few options is 30k  !!!!

Well if it does, it sure isnt on Mead or Havasu...LOL.
The radar graph on Stingrays site shows it in the high 50s.

Thats what he said. 60 in the 220 with the V8. Thats pretty good. I would have never guessed that thing would go over 52-53. :)

I had a 5.7 in a 20 ft that ran 60 and a friend had a 4.3 in a 19ft and ran 59. Its the way the hull is designed..... I really miss that boat. Good all around family boat....

That is what I felt. Im sure with perfect conditions, that thing may see that but to actually do that for any length of time is probably impossible.

Go for a little test drive on the lake bring your GPS and make him prove it!!!!

My Ebbtide 198 ran 56 MPH in the right conditions. On Lake Havasu I was lucky if it stayed on plane with the wind and chop.
Forgot....it had a 5 liter in it.

The Stingray site doesnt really offer exact numbers except on a graph that is hard to read. It's easy to read on the Trailer Boats site. :) Some excerpts from the article:
"Powered by a 225 hp Volvo Penta 4.3L GXi/SX sterndrive with 1.60 gears, our 19 1/2-foot test hull weighed approximately 2577 pounds.
It’s no surprise that the 21-inch wheels ruled when it came to the fastest speeds, but the fact that a four-blade came out on top was interesting. Mercury’s 21-inch VenSura (often called the Offshore Series) four-blade posted a whopping 63.1 mph.
Four other 21-inch props (all three-blade models) were able to bring the 191/2-foot bowrider near or just past the 60-mph mark — not a bad turn of speed for a V-6-powered hull. These included: Merc’s Laser II at 60.7 mph; Michigan Wheel’s Ballistic at 60.1 mph; Volvo’s stainless model at 59.5 mph; and Precision Prop’s Turbo at 58.1 mph."

It will do that, it is just not that deep of a V hull so you will get beat up.

What kind of RPMs was the motor pulling to get 59 MPH? 5000 RPMs divided by 1.60 (gears) = 3125. 3125 X21 (pitch) = 65626. 65625 divided by 12 (inches) = 5468.75. 5468.75 X 60 (hour) = 32728125. 32728125 divided by 5280 (mile) = 61.985085 MPH. (prop speed) At 90%/ 10% drag the boat would be going, so, 61.985 X .90 = 55.786576 MPH. It went how fast? PS, 90% is really very good!!! 85/88% is typical. Did the motor turn over 5000 RPMs?

MAGAZINES NEVER LIE ABOUT SPEED

Todd, I'm trying to figure out how all of this boat stuff works. If Stingray can make a boat run without prop slip, or hull drag, I want to find out how they do it! I bet a lot of boat racers would like to "know how" too.

Yeah...what he said.
Stingray claims very high speeds with low HP in most all their adds in Trailer Boat and other mags. They are also very light for a runabout. We were out in Newport Harbor a couple years back and a guy punched a dock with one. The hull was punched clear through just above the water line. The layup could not have been more than 1/16" thick.

I think they probably have the outdrive lower than most to keep less hull on the water. Kind of like what they do with outboards.

Hell its in print it must be true,
MAGAZINES NEVER LIE ABOUT SPEEDWhy are you shouting? :) So if some magazine lied about something sometime then everything from every magazine is a lie? Why are the Trailer Boat numbers so implausible? Can you cite different numbers from some other magazine that tested that hull with a 4.3L? :boxed:

Marty Gras
11-20-2006, 09:17 PM
So you are saying, the lower the prop is in the water, the faster the boat will run? That means, the higher the prop is, the slower the boat? Does Stingray have a full page color advertisment in Trailer Boats Magazine? That would really "tune up" the speeds! Just like everywhere else.

ACTUALLY,you want the drive higher than lower, raised X-dimension means more speed...trade off is,it can severely affect the handling characteristics of the hull...
I had a boat built,and asked that the X-dimension be raised 1/4 in. from stock,picked up a couple MPH's as a result.

Sorry, NO MORE YELLING....
But I owned one and it never saw a day past 38MPH...
Albeit STINGRAYS website says the boat will see high 40's and their speed chart says 49.1...
So I can only speak on my personal experience with my STINGRAY and that is how I call BS.....
Now if I would have done thru hull maybe 48, but not 49.1
And yes all these boat mags lie and you can qoute me on that

lol was that GPS or speedo 38?
My 18' Stingray with the 3.0 VolvoPenta/SX drive and a 19"pitch 3-blade stainless would show 50 on the speedo at ~4800 (I think thats what that motor revved to??)
250 hours of hard take off water skiing/wake boarding etc on it in two seasons before the drive lunched. Fun little run-about...rode terribly.
Anything bigger than a DUCK wake and 20 MPH was about your top comfortable speed.
