hey holiday i do custom painting at a auto body and did my hydro . i have had no problems . i used ppg products use ncp280 for primer and a 285 activator works great especially on flexible stuff like boats. i used whats called DBU basecoats its a reactive reduced with a drr1180 reducer then use dcd35 clear with du6 hardner do not get the accelerator for it it crystalizes the clear. trust me my boat shines like a babys butt and dont have 1 crack in it and i have hit 109mph on it

I'm interested in this. I didn't know a boat could be painted. I thought you had to re-gelcoat it or something like that. Does the hull need to be scuffed up pretty well beforehand? Does paint hold up well being stepped on when people climb aboard?

the only thing that is different is gel is alot harder and can withstand more abuse ,but clear looks better yes you can walk accross it but its going to be slick also gel has no uv pertection and clear has 70% . scuff the boat with 180 grit paper and prime it block sand with 220 and wetsand oner that with 500 then go for it pick your colors and go

I also believe paint to be cheaper then Gelcoating. Here is one I did using PPG AND House of Kolor paints. The new Urethane clears are awesome and can be easily buffed.

Use Urethane eh? That's a step in the right direction for sure. What do you use to fill small dings in the hull? Epoxy or something like that? I can't imagine using Bondo.

For small dings ,gouges ,etc. I have used a 2-part automotive type spot putty. Stay away from the (out of the tube) type fillers.
Yes a marine epoxy is best for bigger things.
Just think of it as working on a Corvette , They are both Fiberglass. Ever seen a Corvette Gelcoated?

Geez, Finally got a picture to post. I painted this Hallet, 2-years ago. It still looks like new.All in how you take care of something.

Your boat looks sweet! And the paint is 2 years old? Does it seem to you that taking care of such a nice paintjob is harder than gelcoat?
I'd love to repaint my boat but the interior is brand new in it and wouldn't match the color i want to paint it, (2,000 dollars worth). Right now the boat is cream on the bottom with some shades of dark brown on the top, and brown interior too. It surprisingly looks sharp when clean but i prefer a white interior. I wish i would've known before i had the interior redone...

I have had nothing but great experiences with Imron. 7 years on my ski flat and still shining bright. I've never polished or waxed it. Resists scratching the best I've seen, and the boat gets used a lot April through October.

Hey Kurtis,
Imron is probably one of the better paints as well. Heck , Its used on a lot of the big highway rigs. Every painter has his preferance. The base/clears work nice for the custom stuff. I will go with what ever the owner wants. We are always learning. I learned last summer that I could use a kandy color tint coat to repair a worn out metalflake boat. My Dads 6Os Howard was faded out and a lot of silver showing through on the deck. I took a House of Kolor oriental blue ,reshot the deck and clearcoated it.
The boat looks brand new again ,and we didnt have to mess with metalflake. So modern paints have a lot of benefits.

All great ideas, if it were me I would spot prime any repaired areas with a 2 part primer. Sand gelcoat with 180 or 220 grit on a DA sander. Use PPG DP sealer with DP 402, for flexibility, as a wet on wet sealer. That means you can follow with a base coat color after 10 to 15 minutes without sanding. The 180 or 220 grit will give both a strong mechanical and chemical bond. As for base coats, I would prefer PPG DBC because of the thinner film build of the base coat. As far as clear coats are concerned, depending on your VOC laws, you may be regulated to a 3.5 or 2.1 VOC clear. Other good base coats to use are Diamont and Glasso 55 line. I have 25 years in the biz as both a painter and a sales rep, if you e-mail me I would be glad to share any info I have, or make any recommendations.

Riptide, What are your experiences with Scherwin Williams paints? I needed to paint something really quick and bought thier Dimension paint. Bottom of the line, but for $99.00 I got 3 sprayable quarts of red, and 5 quarts sprayable of clear, all with the catalysts. (it was a promotional special) I figured its cheap paint, but for $99 worth the price!

All you guys must pull your boats out of the water when you're finished cruising the river.
If you don't then what are you doing to prevent Osmosis???
A new paint job and umpteen hours spent sanding the bottom of the hull will turn into 80 grit sandpaper after a week sitting in the water as the dock, especially if it has an old metal flake into the gel coat.
Does anyone here know what I'm writing about?
What did you do to stop the Osmosis?
Apparently there are coating you can spray that have microscopic plates that seal up and prevent water from permeating the gelcoat. I think that it's an Interlux product.
All I know is the next time that's what I'm gonn'a do.

Thanks K500, After I posted the question it occured to me that you are not in Calif. There is alot of paints that are available to you guys that are outlawed here. The CARB has done away with alot of great paints that guys like me could use, I'm not a pro painter just a casual user.
