Quicker out of the hole. Sometimes more rpm if you don't have the HP to pull the 22

ive been told to expect at least 300 rpm increase for each jump in gears.......in this case u jumped 22 to 18's to 15's so i would say 600 rpm min.........just my 2 cents

J J changed my gears from 22's to 18's and I increases about 600 RPM with this gear change.
Should be quicker out of the hole.

I just went from 22 to 29 no rpm change. All my motor will rev is 7800 rpms. That's all the RPM's the cam is good for.

600rpm going from 22's to 18's???? :squiggle: :squiggle:
I'm not sure what kind of combination you have but my old set used to turn 29's about 6000, 18's 6500, 15's 6700 and 9's 6900 this was a just a 9:1 454 with a single 4bbl and a flat tappet cam, I ran an 11 x 16 prop too. Are you sure your numbers are right?
Just asking.

With the 22's I ran 5500 rpm and then with the 18's I went up to 6000 rpm.
My motor is week, it been running on the same rebuild for 8 years.
The prop is a 11 x16 BGF . I need to get more power
I have not check the Tach against another one , it could be wrong .

I got home last night and looked at my notes. I made a mistake . I went from 22's to 15's. I was thinking of putting 18's in it, but we decided the 15's would work better.
Sorry about that ..

Brazos River Rat,
Not a problem it just sounded a little off for a 4% change. 600rpm for 22's-15's now that sounds a lot closer. :p

Don't most of us want more power? :crossx: :crossx: So by a BGF prop do you mean one with the wide ears and a lot of blade rake? I think I have one that's supposed to be a BGF style and my other is supposed to be a PGF style and they both act differently on my boat. They are both 11 x 16's too, but they look different even at a glance.
Have fun & be safe

Not for sure on the wide ears and rake. The prop was stamp on one side COLE and the other side 11x16 BGF. I believe this is the prop that came on the boat from Cole . I had to get J J to pull it off with his Monster prop puller.
My heavy duty one just couldn't get it off.
Had to put new bushing in the prop shaft.

I understand it's hard to see the differences by eye if you don't have another to compare to. I'm just starting my prop education, heck I've tried 7 different ones on my boat over the years and they all were just a little different and I'm still using trial and error rather than knowing exactly what I'm looking for.....
