Would AFR's require a custom piston with a large solid roller cam? Figuring that the valve angles change due to a change in valve angle.

The AFR web site states that stock, or equal to stock, componants can be used with their cylinder heads. I assume they are refering to valve train pieces, pushrod lengths, rockers, studs, etc. And no mention of any "custom" pistons.........MP

you always have to check....

The nice thing about going with a custom piston is that you can taylor the compression ratio and other variables to the combustion chamber shape/volume and cam profile. If you go with off the shelf pistons you are limited to whatever CR combinations are available with various pre-fab pistons. This is assuming you wouldn't start messing with the combustion chamber volume in the head.
When you start pricing good pistons like JEs, CPs, etc. It's not THAT much more to get get a custom piston vs. an "off the shelf" job. The real question is considering the combustion chamber profile of the head you're going to use and the available off the shelf offerings; can you get close to your desired CR with adequate Valve to Piston clearance.
If you have the combustion chamber volume, valve lift, valve timing events, and valve diameter you can probably get a fairly good answer from CP or JE on the offerings in their catalog. But as stated, you'll still want to double check everything during mock up.
I'm sure Scott or one of the guys that builds motors can give you more detailed information.

I would shy away from the custom aspect. What happens down the road when you hammer a couple of pistons? If you have 10 made, you'll need 11, Murphy's law...And custom lead time may be weeks....Off the shelve pistons can be matched up by "run numbers" off the original box, and replacement pieces are eaiser to get and match balance to what is re useable from the engine. The small amount of gain to be had by customizing your pistons, unless totally necessary, is IMO not worth the extra hassle down the road. A phone call or an e mail to AFR will straighten out any questions you may have about compatability with a given piston...........MP

all of je and srp pistons are made for 24 degree heads (afr, dart, pro topline, edel 24 deg. victors etc) because they assume any building a motor using that much lift and more importantly duration, is going to be useing after market heads and they are all most all, at least the good ones, 24d heads. but you should still check. Moneypitt is totally right, don't use custom pistons unless you HAVE TO. JE as a ton of stocked configurations on them shelf. Jack one up and a new one is just a phone call and ups truck away.
