What's with the lay out of the Palm Trees at the exit for Rice Road/Desert Center off the 10 Freeway? Any one know the story behind them, or is there even a story?

From Wikipedia:
In the early 1990s, Stanley Ragsdale commissioned the planting of several hundred palm trees in strange patterns on the town’s frontage with Interstate 10. When asked why, he said he always wanted a “tree-ring circus.” Since his death in 1999, the trees have fallen into disrepair and many have died.

Next time you're driving through, stop by the little café. There are (well, there was, I haven't been there in a few years myself) a bunch of framed newspaper clippings that tell the interesting story.
