I just purchased a boat last weekend with a velvet drive transmission. I have never owned a velvet drive. What type of trans fluid do you use in one. ATF ? Gear oil ?
It looks like ATF but kind of brown (not good) What do you recomend to change it with?

SK48,
It seems this question gets asked frequently... The manual calls for Dextron II automatic transmission fluid. If you go with a good synthetic like Redline Hi-Temp ATF you won't have any problems at all. Make sure you drain the old oil completely before putting in the new...

try going to http://www.marinegears.com/techboard/ for any answers to velvet drive questions. Seems like they recomend to NOT use synthetic because it is actually too slippery.

We always used regular Ford type ATF and never had any problems.
