OK Gentlemen.... As usual, I'm starting to go overboard during the reassembly of my 671 Blown 460 BBF. It sports a pair of stocker D3VE-A2A heads that have been machine for double springs, but no port work.. Does anyone out here have a better set of heads for sale? How much? If not, what do you guys think about these on ebay?:
I would really like an honest opinion. I've always been into BBC, so I'm really new into the BBF's.. Don't really know what the prices should be on these things. Thanks, Ivan http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1817973524&r=0&t=0&showTutorial=0&ed=1018308058&indexURL=0&rd=1

there are always the cobajet heads or the dove castings(68-72)these heads will offer higher compression ratios because of there smaller combustion chambers. You can have your current heads ported to improve performance also.If you are staying blown you want the lower compression ratio right?

YES, I want to keep the lower compression ratio, that's why I'm really wondering if I should get any of the earlier heads. The reason I was contemplating the ones on ebay, is by the time I get mine ported, machined for the screw in studs, etc, I would probably have just as much, if not a whole hell of a lot more money into them. I should probably just use mine the way they are for now, and play with the boat this Summer. Then if it's not as fast as I would like, worry about changing them out next Winter. Decisions, decisions...

stick with your 73 heads they are good as long as you have them plorted and polished. and you should be fine . you wnat ot keep the comp ratio down with a blower!

Now, just to find someone in the Memphis area that I can trust to do a decent port and polish?

That's a GOOD question! I work as an aircraft line mechanic for FedEx, and I drive right by RHS every day. They closed their doors to the public a few years ago, though you still can see work going on in the building, and the name remains. I believe they just might do work for race teams, etc.

lmod,I just wondered, back in the stone ages, when I was in the Memphis area and Little Rock, we used them all of the time great work reasonable prices, those heads on e-bay were done by Craig Caulk in Houston, the owner driver of the Nitro-Fish Top Fuel Hydro, he could be a source as you have the shipping already worked out.

I would run the Blue Thunder heads with the Chevy exhaust port. They have three combustion chamber to choose from, make good power, and use stock type valve train components. I run these on my big motor and are making good power. I run the aluminum CJ heads on another motor and are content with them, but they are not the Blue Thunders

GM Killer, one question: HOW MUCH for them Blue Thunder Heads? I've read quite a bit about them, but I bet they're really high dollar.. I don't want to continue spending on this project, because knowing myself, I will probably sell this boat and buy another one within the next year or so.. I guess it's a habit of mine... Buy and Sell!!

I paid around 1500 for the bare heads thru Don Hampton at his blower shop

Damn, just a little TOO rich for my tastes right now.... I'm getting ready to go on vacation to Bora Bora and Moorea Island for 8 days... Leaving for LA next Monday, going to visit parents, etc for a couple days, then leaving for Tahiti on Wedenesday Morning.. The 460 reassembly will have to wait until I return...

Killer, unfortunately, I no longer live in Calif... I've been in Tennessee for 8.5 years now.. But I do visit Calif at least 3-4 times/year.. Those heads are damn nice.. I ended up buying a set of ported and polished D3VE A2A heads on ebay for $255 I'll have them gone through, machined for the screw in studs/guide plates, and then see how they do.. I might eventually SPRING for the Thunder heads, but that will have to be next year. I have 2 daughters in College (20 and 21) and a third getting ready to start next semester (August) I guess I need to act grown up and save some money for the family. Thanks for the help, Ivan

I say go with the D0VE's or equivalent and just open the chambers up a little to lower the comp ratio. And use dished pistons. The exhaust port on your D3's are terrible. Even with good porting they still aren't desined as well as the D0VE's. They're easy to find (D8, D9, or D0 casting's) and a shopt should be able to open the chambers up a bit. If you were in So Cal I could hook you up pretty cheap but it's really expensive to mail 150 lbs of iron across the country.

Damn, wish I would have been able to read this post prior to buying those other heads.. I bought them from a guy out in Calif, so I have to ship across the country anyways.. What do you get for a set of those heads? Ivan

With new valves/springs and proted to customer specs I usually charge about 600 bucks. We're talking flow tested, decked, three angle (or 5) valve job and painted if you so desire, ready to bolt on and rock. If you have any friends, let them know. I do Chev heads too.

LM,
I know nothing about the casting numbers on Ford Heads, but I've done my fair share of hand-porting on all kinds of heads, and the port job on those heads on eBay are the CRUDEST example of hand porting I have EVER seen. RUN!
