Having dealt with dealers over the past 15 years, I have seen it oh too many times when an employee in sales, whether it was new/used/F&I was doing so well and figured out the pay plan so that it worked best in the employees favor, next thing you know the dealer/GM/GSM changes the pay plan so you make less money the following month. What amazes me is that these people are not too happy about writing big checks to a performing employee when all along, that usually means that the dealer/GM/GSM are all making big money as well.
I remember many years ago, there was this guy at Toyota of Cerritos when it was still owned by Lou Webb, and this guy was making upwards of $500k a year. Long story short, this salesman bought a home in the same exclusive neighborhood that Lou Webb was living in, next thing you know, this guy was showed the door (go figure). :hammer2:

Jay,
been following many of your threads and sorry to hear of the change. But the good news is that a talented lad like yourself will find what ya want-stay focused and POSITIVE. There are lots of changes going on in the retailer world and be patient. Many reorgs going on and buysells a happening. It appears that the small stores many be a thing of the past for the next few years.
I am not sure if you have tried any of the autonations or Sonic stores, but they are always looking for hard working dudes- They are kinda like a corporate retail operation with processes as the guiding rule- less gun slinging, a little less paycheck peaks but in mgmt very stable if ya keep your nose clean. No I do not work for them yet but some close colleages are very happy with the changes they have created after they buysell.

MANY MANY MANY places are being sold... Autonation just sold El Monte power back to Scott Gunderson for close to 1/3 of what they paid for it Power in Corona (I understand, But don't know for sure) is for sale, Power in Long Beach just sold Yesterday, Mossy in San Diego CLOSED a few months back.... Things are tough on some dealers and think that has to do with the type of people they hire. I did work for Power in Corona for 3 months in 2004 (call this one a mulligan) the pay is way less and in a management position (at leaset at Autonation) NOTHING gets done without a call to Florida.... When Autonation was buying I think everyone who sold was happy at first. I have thought about Massey in Downey but not acted yet... Do you know something that might help me???? I would be interested to hear... Jay 714 552 0300

I think he knows the industry quite well and will be somewhere else fast. He didn't get fired or layed off. It says he quit so he could find somewhere that he could become a General Manager. This guy is good but he changes dealerships like some change their underwear. When he lands somewhere it will be the 4th dealership I think since I've been on ***boat.
Very true.... I did leave so that other Dealers will know that I am serious and I won't just sell cars.... I did work at a store for 7 years. I started there and they were selling 40- 60 new cars per month. Got my pay plan based on that and it never changed.... So when the sales started topping 200+ per month the GM (owners son, protected my pay plan) got sick and within 2 weeks of the owner finding out what I made as G.S.M. and it was close to what his son G.M. was making Things started changing.... Here I was acting G.M. for 2 weeks and he is not happy with a $1,200 ad (on a $125,000 budget) this is the one thing that put me over the edge. Not knowing when the real G.M. (owners son) is getting back (ended up being several months later). I decide to let him do it his way and quit.
Then on to Power Corona (this was a mistake) The person that had hired me at my pervious job was now the GM and I thought I owed it to her to work for her and build a team..... after 1 month I knew Autonation was not for me Gave notice and it took 2 months to find a fit with Selman...
2 years now with Selman and I start taking to them about a MGMT position several months ago. It is not avail so I told myself I won't JUST sell cars next year and am sticking to that...
I know it seams like I have change jobs but if you take Power Corona out of the mix I have had 2 jobs in 9 years.....

Soon to be something else but I am sure that being an investor in a store will either lead to a life long career or enough money to go buy my own store......... Hope by the fact I am changing stores this dosen't mean I am stable (I am) but looking now to better myself.....
B.T.W. my first job I talked about........
They call often (owners son) to see if I will come back to work. In fact they are buying a store right now they want me to be a G.S.M. at. BUT I want an appoligy (sp?) and the owner would rather give me 5% ownership than the Appoligy...
I do take my job seriously, it is in my blood, and something that will always have a bad stigma to it because of dealers and sales people who don't care about future business, I do care more about my name and future busines than about today..... Sorry for the RANT

No I don't work there. I work for UPS. A Dina works there. Used to be Jim Davis's assistant I guess. Then she went to work for Tom Bell. Jim was our Chevy guy for years as my Father in law started buying from him many moons ago. When we bought our truck Jim had to send us to Dina at Tom Bell as no one in their right mind is going to dealer trade a Wheatland Yellow Silverado. Jim has retired finally and now I get crap in the mail from Dina saying that she has moved blah blah blah. Little does she know that I know that Photoglou can get better deals and service. M.K. Smith is in my city though.

You have changed at least the first part of that because you are not a salesman, you are a customer advocate!

Jay,
Through all the issues the wife and I have been having over the last few months with her vehicle, it was refreshing having you available to assist me with our problems. You were the ONLY person that would return calls and/or messages that I left for the dealership and that was greatly appreciated. Good luck and let us know where you land.

I am truly happy for you Jay. While I have attempted to buy a vehicle from you...could not make it happen on my end...you were tue epitomy of servie and professionalism. No matter what industry you work in, I believe you would be one of the best.
Keeping in mind that I know little about the car industry, but my initial thought would be for you to broker the deals yourself for all makes and models. Is that a viable option? I am sure you have considered all available avenues, but wanted to throw my two cents in the mix.
Anyway, good luck and have a great new year!

I think he knows the industry quite well and will be somewhere else fast. He didn't get fired or layed off. It says he quit so he could find somewhere that he could become a General Manager. This guy is good but he changes dealerships like some change their underwear. When he lands somewhere it will be the 4th dealership I think since I've been on ***boat.
unfortunately that is a very normal part of that industry--in sales and service.
In 12 years I worked at 8 dealers in 2 states--every position from washing cars to management.

I read he's going to Anaheim Chevy..To bad it's not Classic Chevy in Anaheim Hills..closer for me.
Well for 1 1/2 years Classic Chevrolet has been owened by the Selman crew and called Weir canyon Chevrolet.... I had thought that was where I would end up back in late July but it didn't..... We're not that much further at Euclid and Lincoln and if it is worth it look for a special of a free oil change in any Chevrolet vehicle just after Jan 2nd just for stopping by and saying hi..... We will be trying to do this on appointment bases to have everyone in and out in a half hour

Awesome! Congrats Jay. I will be ordering a 3500 Passenger Van from you here shortly if I can move my truck. Need the diesel though. I went on the site trying to figure out the trim packages and everything for you but can't figure out how to spec a diesel, so I will leave that to you...
I will call you when you get settled in.
We will talk Jan 2nd... Thanks for the support
