White Sands in NM is the third site that could be used. However that site has not been used since 1982 and NASA does not like to use it as it would take 2 months to get the shuttle back to FL if they landed there whereas an Edwards landing is only a 1 week delay.
Unstable weather conditions at Kennedy Space Center, Fla., forced flight controllers to pass on Space Shuttle Discovery’s first landing opportunity of the day. The STS-116 crew and flight controllers have turned their attention to a set of three opportunities on the next orbit, number 203.
The opportunities on orbit 203 are at 5:32 p.m. EST at Kennedy, 5:27 at Edwards Air Force Base in California, and 5:27 p.m. at the White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico.
Flight controllers and forecasters will continue to monitor weather at all three sites. If weather does not cooperate, on orbit 203, two opportunities are available on orbit 204 – 7 p.m. at Edwards and 7:02 at White Sands. One opportunity is possible on orbit 205 – 8:36 p.m. at Edwards.

Official......They just got the go ahead to load the PAD for Edwards .:D but the cross winds are becoming BAD ( out of limits )
It could change if Kenndy clears up enough, CAPCOM just gave additional coordinates to the shuttle.
White Sands is out currently due to weather.
Boom Boom
exciting isn't it:)

I was actually able to spot the shuttle as it approached for an Edwards landing some years back from So Cal. .........def. worth seeing it up close if you have the chance.
.
.
You'd think LAX could handle it landing there :D :D

Looks like they've just given them approval to land at KSC.
NASA Channel is showing it all right now.

You know what... it could. The Shuttle was designed to use any civilian landing strip longer than about 7500 feet. I didn't believe that either till I read an article one of the Shuttle test pilots wrote (Robert Obermyr).
That has never been tried, but if push came to shove it's an option.

Ah well. Good Journey.
Keep our hopes up, it'll land out here again.
As far as landing at other airstrips, I think it's an act of god thing.
