I did that to my shoulder on a water ski one time.
Not good, it can cause blood clots that can travel to your heart and kill you.

I'm not sure of the true nature of the crash, but he was riding in Breezewood, PA and didn't sick the landing.

That's some serious road rash. I've seen one's like that go to a burn center for grafts.

That pic is about a year old, the aftermath of a compound fracture. Last month they gave me a "tummy tuck" and now my belly button is on my leg... :) Kinda amazing if ya think about it!

I had problems with infection, as this type of injury tends to have, but the reason behind the "skin flap" was that the broken bone would not heal and needed a graft. Without a proper covering of skin, blood supply to the bone is compromised and the original thin skin grafts may have died as well. Still waiting to see how this all turns out. :)
