DENVER (AP) -- Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning.
Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed.
A little after 2 a.m., a white Hummer limousine was sprayed with bullets from a vehicle that pulled up along its side, said Sonny Jackson, spokesperson for the Denver Police Department.
Three people in the limousine were hit and were taken to area hospitals, where one man was pronounced dead, Jackson said. The other man and woman who were shot were not identified.
Jackson said police were searching for the suspects and interviewing witnesses.

"We have no motive yet," Jackson said. "We're hoping to talk with witnesses to find out where they were coming from, and that might give us some clues."
Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization.
"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.
Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.
The 24-year-old Williams finished the season with 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions.
On Sunday against the 49ers, he had three tackles and returned two punts for 50 yards before leaving the game with a shoulder injury late in the second half.
Williams, a second-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State in 2005, made an immediate impact on the Broncos, starting nine times in his rookie season following a stellar career at Oklahoma State, where he totaled 11 interceptions and scored three touchdowns on punt returns.
Players and coaches are off Monday. They were scheduled to meet Tuesday before heading home for the offseason.

Sounds fishy to me. Sounds more like an assassination than a "drive-by". One car drove up to his car and riddled it with bullets. Someone in that car was intended to get hit.

Is that why the 9ers beat them?

Woke up to a phone call at 6:00am this morning telling me about this. It's all over the news here. All of us in Bronco country are pretty sad about this.
The reports I have heard so far are indicating that this was some sort of a hit. Apparently the shooter only targeted the area of the limo that Williams was in so that would mean whoever did this had to know who was sitting where.

DENVER - Less than 24 hours after playing in the last game of the season, the Denver Broncos say 24-year-old Darrent Williams was killed.
According to Denver Police, Williams was killed in an early morning shooting after someone with a gun pulled up alongside the white Hummer stretch limousine he and wide receiver Javon Walker were riding in and fired a number of shots.
Police say 16 people were in the stretched Hummer at the time of the shooting, including Williams and Walker.
Police say that it happened near 11th Street and Speer Boulevard at 2:30 a.m. on Monday.
Some of the streets in the area were shut down during the investigation.
Three people were shot and police say the limo was sprayed with bullets. At the scene, 9NEWS could see what appeared to be eight bullet holes in the limo.
Police say the three were taken to area hospitals where Williams was pronounced dead.
Authorities say the other two victims who were shot suffered minor injuries. Their names were not immediately released.
Team spokesman Jim Saccomano says he spoke with Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization after police told him of the incident.
"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.
Saccomano says police called him at around 3 a.m.
Authorities say they believe the shooting was a drive-by, and that the shooter or shooters did not know who was in the vehicle. Police say the shots were fired with a semi-automatic weapon.
Police say they are still searching for suspects and interviewing witnesses.
"We have no motive yet," Jackson said. "We're hoping to talk with witnesses to find out where they were coming from, and that might give us some clues."
Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.
Williams played in the first half of the game but sat out the second half with a shoulder injury.
However, during the game he had a sack, a forced fumble, and led the team with seven sacks. He also returned two punts for 50 yards.
Williams, a second-round pick in the 2005 draft out of Oklahoma State, started nine games as a rookie due to injuries. This season, he took over as the starter for Lenny Walls alongside Champ Bailey, and had 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions.

Unfortunately, I have to agree. Correct or not, it smells strange. Sure hope they find the guilty party(ies). Gonna be interesting to follow this case.
I hope whoever works it is more competent that whoever worked the Jon-Benet Ramsey case.

He was an outstanding player and good example while he played here. It is a pity that someone with such promise and a strong desire to give hope to his home town was taken out by low lifes.

Log on to espn.com and thiers articles and interviews from other players that had talk to him and seen him "up in da club" that night. Javon Walker, probably the broncos best offensive player was also in the limo...and un hurt. 16 people were in there and only he was killed. some are saying it was a hit on Darrent, and the shooters new right were he was sitting.....hmm...either way it is sad, a young talented athlete with a future in pro sports dead.

They are saying on the news now that Williams group got into a confrontation with another group. They also now have a vehicle description.
This town eats, sleeps, and breathes Denver Broncos Football. Someone will talk and the killer will be brough to justice. There is just no way a Bronco killer is going to get away.

Update:
Denver police investigating the New Year’s morning slaying of Darrent Williams have issued an all points bulletin for a white Chevy Tahoe that is linked to a self-professed gangmember who has been accused of shooting at a woman who was later killed a week before she was to testify against him.
Police are looking for a 1998 four-door White Chevy Tahoe with Colorado plates 665OBS, associated with 27-year-old Brian Kenneth Hicks.
Hicks was in Denver County Jail the morning of Williams' fatal shooting. He has been there since his arrest Nov. 9 on a charge of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. It is unclear who was driving the vehicle on New Year's.
Reached at her apartment today, Hicks’ wife, Kimaya James, was aware that police are looking for her husband's vehicle. She said she does not know who has been driving the Tahoe while he’s been in jail, and she declined to talk about Hicks or the new developments in the Williams slaying.
CBS 4 News has confirmed that Denver police detectives have tried to interview Hicks at the jail in connection with the death of Williams. Hicks reportedly refused to talk with them. He was moved into his own cell today.
Williams, a 24-year-old cornerback and second-round draft pick for the Denver Broncos, was shot and killed early Monday morning when at least 14 shots were fired into the white stretch Hummer limousine that was carrying the athlete, teammates Javon Walker, and several other friends and associates from a party The Shelter, a club located at 10th Avenue and Broadway.
Williams, hit in the neck, is believed to have been killed instantly. Two additional passengers were also hit by gunfire, but were not critically wounded.
Police have previously said they are investigating reports of verbal altercations between members of Williams’ entourage and a second group that they encountered at the nightspot.
Investigators have said Williams was not believed to have been a direct participant in the reported dispute, and that no shots were fired from his limousine prior to the fatal shots being fired from the suspected white Chevy Tahoe near the intersection of West 11th Avenue and Speer Boulevard, about 2:20 a.m.
Rev. Leon Kelly, executive director of Denver's Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives, said Hicks is a member of the Crips gang. He said he has heard that the nightclub altercation prior to Williams' murder may have involved verbal sparring between members of the Crips, who typically wear blue, and members of the Bloods, who wear red.
"Any time you have meetings between these two groups, you’re going to have some kind of drama," said Kelly. "And the thing is that I would venture to say the parents of any of these kids would say their sons and daughters were not in gangs, but their friends are — even though they were dressed all in red and or all in blue."
In addition to the drug charges Hicks is currently jailed for, the gangmember is awaiting trial in an attempted murder case. He was charged with firing shots on June 12, 2005, at vehicles outside a nightclub in the 900 block of Acoma Street. Although no one was hit in that shooting, bullets hit a vehicle carrying Kallonniann Louisa Clark-James.
Hicks was due to stand trial for attempted murder in that case the week of Dec. 11. But, five days earlier, two men broke into Clark-James’ residence at 37 S. Colorado Blvd., demanding money and drugs, according to her husband, who was there at the time. The couple ran from the residence, but Clark-James was shot once in the head and died a short time later. Her husband, Nicholas James, was not injured.
No arrests have been made in Clark-James’ death, but her family members said that she had been threatened by Hicks, should she testify against him.
Hicks declined a reporter's request for an interview last month and today. Although he has not been charged with the slaying of Clark-James, Hicks' bail was was raised from $500,000 to $1,050,000.
His attorney in the drug possession case is prominent Denver defense attorney Walter Gerash.
Gerash could not be reached for comment this morning, as he is undergoing hip replacement surgery. But another member of his firm, Andrew Reid, said this morning that he was unaware police were looking for Hicks’ car in connection with the Williams homicide of New Year’s morning.
"He’s in jail, so he obviously could not have participated directly. We don’t have any other comment than that," said Reid. He added, "We don’t have any knowledge of any role that he played in this."
