The options in IE7 suck. They block too much or not enough.
I bought Net Nanny and it won't block porn search results.
I know about the watch over their sholder rule but that gets old quick.
My son is 10 and curious. I dont think he could handle accidently stumbling on a gay porn site or somthing like that.
What do you guys use to keep them from seeing porn???
He is very mature for his age and has to use the internet for school and reports etc..... so taking a computer away is not the answer.

I use http://www.cyberpatrol.com/ for some public computer labs at work. It seems to work well.

My kids are very bright, a few of their friends even far brighter.
Mind boggling the best and super smart.
They can easily jump the systems safeguards and get porn if they want to.
They taught me how to beat websense at my work, and easily.
Their are dozens of free browsers on the web they can download and use them to beat the plan,, they have other backdoor ways in,,, a bottomless pit of ways.
The best thing is to set standards for the kids and insist they follow them.
The wife has a telltale kinda program that will bring up a map of where they go on the web, in addition to all the restrictions on their browser,, but,,,
if they want to beat that,, I'm sure they could.
Keep a close eye on what they do.

I use Spector Pro and was upfront about telling him that his internet activities are being tracked. Other than that I added a host file that I downloaded from here ( http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm) and edit it monthly based on his web activity.

Are girls really that interested in Porn? Perhaps, but their is worse to monitor:
Our problem was her being contacted by people.
The creeps have all kinds of clever ways.
They have it down. Everyday a new way figured out.
Young girls hit the early teen age where they want to be noticed and that doesn't help.
They get so niave and gullable.
Ya double check everyplace they go.
The movies, ya walk in a few minutes after the flick starts and do a visual of who they're sitting with.
Disneyland,,ect,,, ya gotta follow up and keep an eye on them in spite of the internet safeguards.
They get on the net at your home with your rulebook in place,, and then at a girlfriends home with different standards, and the stunts start.
Their is always the girlfriend whos parents heads are in the clouds, have no clue.

My daughter was a bright 13 year old.
Cute as a newborn puppy, savvy, quick wit, nobodys fool.
She was number 1 at her school on the honor roll and her 2 best friends were super brite and cute too.
They were in a school homework internet chat room, and hooked up with older guys that claimed they were much younger. How the older guys got in the chat room is a thread in itself. A real eye opener how easy it is.
The girls of course, claimed they were 16, ya know how that goes at that age, and they met the way older guys in the Winnetka movies.
I've been dropping them off there for years, what could go wrong?
I get a cellphone call from a mother that knows us - who's daughter happened to be at the same movie and called her.
You can't believe how upset you get. You are beside yourself with grief and dissapointment.
I called my brother - on duty LAPD and he and his partners had the guys hooked up in the parking lot when I got there.
Ahhh did that episode ever suck,,,
You don't want to go through it.

Im not saying interested in porn, Im saying accidentally running into it. I remember looking up the Spice Girls (female group) from way back, porn showed up. Miguels daughter was right there, at the time she was about 8. Not good.....

I have worked in the Internet provider industry for the last 17 years. My children are 15, 13 and 12. B-B-G. I am convinced that curious children with the support of predators WILL find a way to defeat any software system that you deploy. Hacks for games, MySpace, "free" music downloads, videos, etc are all hooks used to suck them in when they're intentions maybe all good. These are both incredible and very terrible times.
I pray that I am open enough with them so that WHEN they see something freaky, they'll know it as a perversion and reject it as such and move on.

Porn is the internet...( thats got to be a new sig for someone :D ) if your kids want to find some... they will. I can't tell you how many searchs I have done where a porn link will come up. I would be more worried about some perv trying to get a hold of them...
and NO 10 year old girl needs a laptop.

porn is everywhere MTV and alike . give you child a
sense of self worth instead of a laptop. if you teach your
kids how to think first then they can learn anything

Part II:
A teacher at Alemany H/S where the girls attended was passing himself off on the internet, in their "secure" schools homework assignment/help/chat room as a student.
The girls told me right away what they suspected and the guy was pretty crude and rank.
A call to the LAPD sent an LAPD officer who is a a computer forensics specialist to our home, and she plugged into our computer and was able to extract everything this teacher conversed with the girls.
So about two weeks later, when the kids were all at the school lunch area, located way on the other side of campus, the LAPD child sex crimes unit quietly entered the school, hooked up the teacher and hauled him off to the hole.
So,, armed with the knowledge ya can get old deleted info from your computer:
When the girls got caught at the movies, they all claimed it was a chance meeting, they had no clue about the "men".
I then got a kid down the street, Jordan who is a computer mega brain, an 11 year old digital phenom, to bust into our computer and print any and all deleted e mails and Instant messages ever ran on our computer.
When he realized he was producing evidence that would get the girls grounded and in deeper trouble, even the girls future first born kids grounded for eternity, he balked.
I then made promises it would be confidential and sweetened the cash so Jordan agreed and got all kinds of incriminating evidence printed. Brutal stuff.
So check this out:
One of the girls mothers, a super wealthy and pretty cool mom, told me I was way, way over reacting, her believing the girls story,, until I gave her the E mails and the printed IM's.
She turned pale and lost her breath.
That info sucked the bone marrow outta her.
The girls IM conversations with the guys would really upset any parent, and that they covered it all up with a story that was falling apart fast was more upsetting.
This stuff blindsides ya no matter how wide your eyes are open.

Put the computer in a high traffic area of your house (living room, near kitchen) with the monitor facing out. Never let your kids have a computer in their personal bedroom or any room where they can be behind closed doors. This sets the tone that anything they pull up can be and likely will be seen by another family member and helps keep them honest.
As for chatting, I'm not sure I'd let my kids participate in chat rooms. That said our girl is only 5 so we don't have that problem yet. Just seems like too much potential for issues doing that. I'd rather they pick up the phone if they need to communicate with someone.
Tough but good question. Something I really worry about...

You can get software that records and tracks everything that happens on your computer. It will tell you what your kids have been looking at, who they are talking to and what they are saying. I wish I had had it.
Put it in a high traffic area. We kept ours in the kitchen. There was always someone looking over your shoulder. This also keeps you out of the porn sites! LOL But you have to sleep so set rules about when the computer can be used, and enforce them.
However, what you really have to do is raise your kids right and trust them to make the right judgement, but also follow up on what they are doing and who they are hanging out with. Because as was said, any of this stuff can be defeated. But if you take an honest interest in you children and their activities it will do a lot toward keeping them away from this stuff and from predators.
Even so kids still make dumb mistakes, I know I did. Fortunately ours had a good outcome. After my daugther went off to college 2000 miles away, she informed us she was moving out of the dorm into an apartment with her "boyfriend" who she had met on the internet while still in highschool. My wife and I almost had a heart attack. We insisted on all the info on this guy, contacted his parents and finally established that he was not some weirdo predator. But he could have been! We were prepared to do whatever it took if this guy turned out to be a predator. And I think my daughter learned something from it. So, do all that you can, educate your children! Make sure your kids know what the consequences can be, and make sure they know that no matter what happens you love them and are there for them. You as a parent can only do so much, but DO IT!
