I have been wanting to take a class to learn to build websites for awhile now.
Any places local that you would recomend?
I am looking for something where I can go on weekends or evenings and wrap it up/learn enough in a couple weeks.(I don't have the time to take a college course)
Suggestions?:)

I have an artistic background but I need to know what formats work the best and collect general information.
You could probably teach me the basics in a day.(Let me know when your avaliable I will buy lunch)

New Horizons is really good, I think the nearest one to you is in Anaheim.

They have a lot of classes at all levels, you can take weekdays, nights or weekends. You could be designing basic web sites after a couple 1 day or 1 night classes. To to advanced stuff, it takes a lot more time then that.

Do you know PhotoShop already? That would be a start.
Otherwise add that to your list of things to learn. Unless you want your website to look like... well, crap!

I learned everything from night classes at Art Center and a ton of online tutorials.
Search for Photoshop tutorials. You can build your whole site in PS and then upload it and manage it with Dreamweaver.

Microsoft Front Page is fairly easy to learn....most the real advanced guys don't use it, but I think it works pretty good for a beginner/intermediate type designer...

Don't you worry about that I re wired an old atari console to a black and white TV my Grandpa had sitting in his garage. All I need now is to find some Pong controllers so I can control this monster of technology!!!:D

I bought a template from these guys. http://www.ecommercetemplates.com/frontpageecommerce.asp
There are lots of people selling them, I just did a search on the web for e-commerce templates. Then did the rest with front page. Don't get me wrong, I probably have 250+ hours into it so far. It is time consuming, but not impossible.

Problem with building sites that are ecommerce based, is that they aren't search engine friendly. If you are trying to build a site to get business online it must be search engine friendly.
I agree with RRX, knowing photoshop is 1/2 the battle to building a presentable website.

What about a suggestion for a domain host/provider?
I use Register for my company and they are OK.

www.godaddy.com for domain registration........... they also will host the site.

I know it costs more but I still like register.com for domain registration. For hosting, just find someone who will be around in 6 mo.

I agree on the Dreamweaver - get the suite with Flash and Fireworks (Graphics). I heard Limewire had a full copy that actually worked, sans the viruses ;). http://www.istockphoto.com/index.php is also a great resource.
I also agree with buying a template. There are some really great ones out there. Changing out everything else can be easy or difficult, depending upon the content itself.
The learning curve is tough with any graphics program, irrespective of your artistic talent.
I jsut started wrenching on a new website with Flash, it's for a specialty niche company of mine. I am adding page content now...so yes, it's still missing pages. My legal mumbo-jumbo looks good though....
--FLASH CHECK-- Does the page load fine?

I'm out of town right now and just saw this thread. Let me tell you, I hope you I'm sooo frustrated right now with the customer service of the company that has started my shopping cart, that I'm ready to explode. I hope you learn so you can help me. Thank God I got Dennis (H20SKI2GAY) ;)involved. He did a great job on my graphics, however this has nothing to do with the cart.
