Heard it from a pretty good sourse also looking for 11 more all full time. Does this seem like a lot to you?

It is as they only have about 83 now. The new chief is progressive and an outstanding leader. He will bring the department to the next level. Add in good political support for a change which means $$ to do it right.

I can't imagine that there is that much growth, so why so many vacancies? With that many new hires, I assume most are laterals, because I imagine it would be impossible to train that amount of new employee's.

We are running 4 academies per year with about 65-75 cadets in each, most with our dept. Also hiring 50-100 laterals per year, but that well is drying up. We need about 100 or so per year just to keep up with attrition and the rest for growth.
