TOKYO (Reuters) - A tsunami warning was issued on Saturday for the eastern part of Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido and a lesser warning for a wide swathe of northeastern and eastern Honshu, Japan's main island, NHK public television said.
The earliest possible arrival of the tsunami was estimated at 2 p.m. (0500 GMT) on the eastern coast of Hokkaido with an estimated maximum height of one meter.
The warning came after a moderate earthquake on the Japanese scale of 3 rocked parts of eastern Hokkaido and northeastern Honshu. There were no immediate reports of injuries from the earthquake.

It was flashing across the bottom of the weather chanel. 8.4 is STOUT, the time, well, estimated possible time, of arrival along the west coasts of Alaska, Canada and the western seaboard, south to the Mexican border.......NO sign it has happened, but they don't take any chances as you can't see them coming until its about too late..........MP

The times are flashing across the bottom is an advisery of when the wave, if there is a wave, would hit the various spots along the coast of North America. Since all the loss of life around the last big one off Indonesia they are trying to issue the warnings "just in case". whereas before they wouldn't until they had real proof for fear people would become complacent to the warnings when nothing happened. 8.4 is a stout quake and could easily generate a tsunami. .......or not..........MP

This has been a good example of why the monitors hesitate to issue these adviseries. People, like us, will be lulled to sleep by false alarms and fail to react when there really is a threat. Human nature, cry wolf to often and the alarm will be ignored. My location is high and dry from any tsunami danger, but not all of us are, and I like the idea of a being warned of ANY possibility of lowlanders invading my space to escape the water..........MP
