All this talk about cold weather...if a 454 cracks because of freezing temps..normally where would it crack..and if it is cracked would it still run fine on the trailer and the damage not show up until the boat is under load in the water...

Sure it will run great on the trailer. Then maybe a Milkshake or a Fountain when you put in the water for the first time:sqeyes:

Yep. It won't likely harm the running, just the ability to hold it's water.:(

It's not that I forgot to winterize...I live in Idaho.....my boat is my heated garage..I bought a jet in the Sacramento area..it hasn't been ran in 5 years, it's just been sitting in a garage. This whole cold weather thing has me worried about the condition of the block. I might luck out and over the years all the water dried out before a deep hard freeze.
One other question..if the oil seal in the pump has dried out and is cracked..does it need to be replaced or can you just let the water seep in and lubricate the system and not really worry about the seal..
The boat in question is in the Sacramento area..I bought it..just waiting for the weather to clear to go get it..

In Idaho we don't have cracked block problems..when it gets cold, the motor comes out of the boat and BBC goes into bed with you..your women then sleeps on the floor. Come spring life is great because they get to come back into bed..they become really greatfull. When you live in Idaho there are 3 things you take good care of..your guns, boat motor and your women..in that order! That's just the way it's always been!!!! That's how it will always be..

To answer your question about where they crack. I have seen them crack mostly on the sides of the block up towards the head. Right along the top parallel to where the head bolts on above the freeze plugs.

But isn't that where the "plug" is supposed to be installed?
Hopefully it's been sized for a "press fit". :D

unless it was exposed to freezing temps for several days outside it still might be ok if it was in a garage.....go drain the block dont worry about it u cant do anything now anyway...... :)
