Forgive me for being somewhat of a noob, but what exactly is an inducer, what does it do and how is it installed in the pump?

It preloads the pump to stop cavitation. You machine the shaft and it slips on before the impeller. I ran one last year and it made a huge difference in holeshot! They are mainly used with smaller impellers. Guys cut the impeller down to pull the rpm's up to make peak Hp. Then they loose holeshot in the boat because the pump slips on holeshot. When the inducer is added you gain alot of holeshot back in the boat.

Right now the pump has an A impeller. That's what it came with stock and that was what came in the rebuild kit.
However the boat originally had a 455 Olds in her as well, but we're changing to a BBC 427 Stroker (aka 454) .
Specs on the BBC:
9.5:1 Compression
TRW L2465F Pistons
Stock rods & crank
Haven't figured out which oil pump yet
Isky 280 Mega HTP grind hydraulic flat tappet cam:
280* Seat-Seat Duration, 234* .050 Duration, .565' Valve Lift
353049 heads
2.19 Intake 1.88 Exhaust valves
Stamped Long Slot Rockers
Double Roller Timing Chain
Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap manifold
Holley 750 Double Pump carb (R-80537)
Bassett Long Collector Headers

I dont think you need an inducer. You will be happy with that combo! We did a similar combo with my buddies boat and it had killer throttle response and the holeshot was killer! I would go with what you have right there then make changes! Do you have a loader? If not I would install one;)
