I've been to the oldest functioning beer brewery in the world.
It's called Weihan Stefan in Germany, not too far from Munich.
Established in the year 1060, it is a Monk Monastery. Much as you'd expect, it looked and felt very castle-like. Went for dinner there............friggen delish........and some world famous brew....friggen delish too. The room we were in was dark, almost dungeon feeling. Bought some mugs to bring back home. Beer seems to taste real good in them :D
.
Yet, one of my more favorite beers is a Munich local beer, Paulaner.
What is yours?

Guinness isn't even the oldest brewery in Ireland, that's Smithwick's established in 1710. Guinness was established about 50 years later. :)

If you like say, Sierra Nevada or IPA try this one out. It is my all time favorite beer and I am a total beer snob. Comes right out of my own city Vista, CA.
Reaper Ale Sleighor Double IPA
Check them out. I guarantee you will like it. http://www.reaperale.com
Here are a few of my other favorites:
Sierra Nevada (this is what Coors light and all the blue collar beers are to most people. I drink this as a bare minimum.)
Guinness
Murphys Stout
Nectar Ale's IPA
Red Hook ESB
Solana Beach Pizza Port's "Porter"
Vista Lamp Post Pizza'a "Double IPA"
Ale Smith IPA
Dinkleacker (just kidding. this is a very bad German beer.)
There are a lot more but these are my standards.

I was watchin' Discovery Channel and they found some sealed 2700 year old beer crocks in a tomb. There was DNA or (??) something in there where they will be able to replicate the formula....
Wonder what the %ALC will be.... :)

My friend brews Mead, which is basically the first type of commonly used beer in recorded history. It tastes like a mixture between a pale ale and champagne. Really tasty but sneaks up on you.

Mead is fermented honey. Beer is fermented grain (barley). Some meads can get up to 25% alcohol where the strongest beers top out around 10%.
I like the Paulaner hefeweizen and Oktoberfest. The Weihenstephan hefe is good too.
One of my favorites is the 3 Floyds brewery in Indiana. www.threefloyds.com It's hard to get here though.
