I've been watching a little of this and I have to say I cannot believe these prices. Granted I'm just a retired Operating Engineer and thought I did OK or at least made a decent living but these guys are dropping some serious dough. How many people can keep buying these cars at these prices. There are some real beauties though. Fun to watch and pretend. NSF

Their are more people out there with money to burn than you can imagine
Check out all the private jets along Int Blvd at LAX.
These owners own SEVERAL private jets.
They rarely get flown by the owners,, just maint,, the minimum time put on the aircraft to be FAA compliant,, and they sit there in the salt air and rot.
My wife comes from a super wealthy family and money problems have never crossed her mind, she has no perception what-so-ever of a cash flow issue. Money is of no concern at all.
The Forbes 400 is a joke.
The US is full of tons of people with money beyond your wildest comprehension.

The sad thing is these cars are not museum pieces.
They are meant to be driven and I mean driven like a hotrod.
At the prices they command these days, these poor cars are lucky to see the light of day for long enough to cross over the auction block.
A former girlfriend's dad from the past has a "gennie-gennie O" early model Vette. I don't remember the exact year, but it was on of the earliest years with the Rochester fuel injection.
This car was breathtaking, especially for a gearhead, sat in his a climate control garage under a cover. Hadn't seen the light of day for 5 years when I saw it for the first time. At that time, 15+ years ago, it was worth 100G.
He never drove it for fear of something happening to it.
Sad.

This whole phenom is rapidly redefining the whole hobby.
Some of these cars have ceased to be automobiles, and become bank accounts. That's okay whn we are talking Packard, Hemi, Shelby, COPO Camaro. 427 Tri-Power Corvette, Duesenberg, Bugatti, etc.
But it is insane when we are talking about a 6-banger car that has been painted and striped to look like something it isn't. "Recreations, "Tributes", etc are cool, but they should be built to drive, and there is no inherent or intrinsic value in them. It is nuts.
They are driving the real car people right out of the cars, IMHO.

HCS
01-20-2007, 04:50 PM
Ya I look at that and think what would do with a car after paying that kind of money.
You'd be afraid to drive the car.
Of course if I was that rich I'd probably drive it anyway. Why else own it.

at the same time guys who grew up watching their parents drive these cars and listening to that music. give it a chance and be thankful they didn't over do it ( that will come in a couple more yrs.)
I can't believ no one here mentioned the '55 KURTIS 500 roadster sold for $575,? Isn't that built by the same family that originally built the drag boats? I peeled the bottom off my '76 Kurtis 500 runnerbottom but thankfully didn't crash or sink it other than onto the trailer at Cyn. Lake, AZ
Ooops, here we go w/ more music stuff. Maybe I spoke too soon, but did you see who bought Bill Haleys stuff the same guy who paid 5 mil for the Super cobra
How bout the Duesenberg? I figured it'd go for $350,000 and it slowed for a while at that price and 375, put ended up selling for 625, oh my goodness!!!!!

Yeah, it's a little dirty. It's a clone. Started as a Barracuda 318 car. Original 440-6 motor, though. 727 auto trans, 3.91 rear. Drum brake car. Needs some updating and detailing, but a nice fast driver. Gave $18K.

I will tell you guys what, I will build you guys a Cobra kit car with a built 427, all of the bells and whistles, it will look just like Carrol's. I will take 1 million off because it is a kit and sell it to you for $4,000,000.00 Now if that is not a discount, I do not know what is (LMAO):D

If you realy look at this Super Snake you would see that it is a one of a kind hand built by Carrol. This is a priceless sample of the legacy of Shelby and to know that only 2 of these were build and the other is gone along with the owner. Anyone can buy a kit shelby, But don't fool yourself that it's anything close to being worth a Carrol personal touch Shelby.

Shelbys personal car not worth 5M? Probably not but when he sells it for a couple million profit after he dies, what does he care?
TPC is right. When your in that league it doesn't matter what it costs, just that you want it. And then they bring it to the shop where I work and we take 'emm apart and paint it a different color for 100k-200K so it becomes thier car not theguys they bought it from.
My brother did a Javelin (yes a RAMBLER) that was consigned to BJ but never made it across the stage that went for $800,000

I did know. I just had no money back then. If I did I would still own my other two GTO's , the Shelby Mustang, the Coronet R/T the Hurst/Olds etc..
In the mid to late 70's I was always telling my buddies not to butcher their muscle cars and not to swap out the engines because they would be worth more if they were in original condition. They would never listen.

construction/truss/lumber pays pretty well. he purchased the Bonneiville Special, the GM Futureliner , and the first Shelby 500 from Ford for a $600k donation to Carrol's foundation among other things last year. he has a must see collection in Chandler.
