How did the ability to communicate effectively using the written word become so lost? I have had over 20 people work for me in the last 3 years, nearly all of which dismiss this ability in one phrase... "I can't spell".
Crappy handwriting is one thing... I hate writing too, and I have no idea why schools even teach cursive. But, in response to hating to write, I learned how to write in block letters, so at least I can get my point across if need be.
It seems like I am constantly going around the shop correcting spelling, and this place nearly gives me an aneurysm every time I am on here. For the most part, this forum represents an awful large cross section of middle America. I don't want to be considered a spelling Nazi, but if you are misspelling words, especially in the titles of threads, you are making everyone who reads it think you are a dullard.
Just think about it next time you dismiss proper written communication as "I can't spell". It has the same effect to many people as "I don't bathe". Sure, it is a personal choice, but it affects everyone.

Not hung, just thought to be somewhat illiterate.
It isn't like we can't figure out what you meant to say, it is just that it is incredulous to me that someone would have so little consideration for the impression being left on the rest of the world.
Internet forum or not, the inability to spell correctly casts a shadow that smacks of poor education, accurate or not.
I personally take pride in what I present to the public, and this is the public. If it isn't important to you... awesome. But you should know that an easy dismissal of basic punctuation, spelling and composition skills will create an image that you may not wish to have created.

Froggy, Froggy, Froggy...:D
I can tell you how.
People stopped reading books, stopped reading newspapers, and stopped writing letters. This all started in the late seventies as TV got to the point where there were about 200 channels; and staring at the TV Box became the national pastime.
Parents stopped reading to their young children, so the children never learned about the world of books. MTV replaced the library, and then MTV was joined by video games.
All of this caused people to not give a damn about their written communication skills. The ability to spell is directly related to the ability to read, and reading recreationaly is a core factor in honing that skill.
I ran the Field Training Officer Program for our agency for over 5 years. Without a doubt, the biggest single cause of headaches for FTO's in our agency was attempting to teach an adult High School Graduates to read and write a simple police reoprt. High School Graduates today cannot read, write or spell any better than I could when I was in fourth grade. I cannot tell you the number of times I read a, "final draft" of a trainee's attempt to write a police report and wanted to puke.
The FTO's said that the trainees had started calling me, "Sgt. Sharpee" because of my propensity to cover their chicken scratch with red corrections.
Good luck, my friend. It ain't gonna get any better. The only reason my boys can write & read is because I forced them to do so from about 5 years old.
The public schools...well, that is another story.

Yeah, interesting timing on this thread Frogman. Just got my insurance cards faxed over for my new car I'm picking up tomorrow. The girl at my agent's office was hard enough to understand on the phone, and based upon her handwriting I'm thinking she's 10 working an after-school job. Looks like my writing if I try to write backwards and left handed. Amazing. Figure she'd have a template and just type it out. Yikes!!! :jawdrop: :D

I have my moments...
Applying yourself to everything you attempt is not a flaw.
If it makes you feel any better, I am very bad at administrative work, terrible at getting stuff put in a box and shipped UPS and I tend to leave all of my clothes right where I took them off.
Sometimes, depending on the occasion I will forget about anniversaries, birthdays and special occasions too. I can't play piano very well either. Something about coordinating both hands musically I can't figure out. Strange, since I can play guitar pretty well.
The difference is, I don't claim to be a UPS wizard, CPA, receptionist or wedding planner. I also don't play piano in a band, or for a living.
What I do put my name on I take pride in though. My posts and public writings are one of those things. So is the boat.

I know what you mean, but I just can't stop myself.
In fact, it is ironic. Here I am posting about spelling and the image it leaves on others while simultaneously alienating an absurdly large group of boaters. I am guessing that the image I leave of a spelling Nazi will be taken by those with poor spelling skills as a negative, hurting my buisness in the long run.
Crazy double edged sword. I was more curious than anything else why people don't care any more. When I write the updates, my Dad (the original spelling Nazi) spends time re-writing some grammar errors (usually slang or otherwise) and keeping the public releases down the middle. He is correct in that recent current jargon doesn't really have a place in business, but I still do it on occassion, such as the referenced "Tridizzle Custom Bizzle" which is more of a joke than anything else.
I just was thinking about it when someone else posted the question of "how do you tell someone that they stink" earlier, and I realized that I draw a really similar conclusion about spelling errors.
We have all joked before about the lack of control we have for the image that we portray towards people... i.e. A Starbucks cup in hand seems to indicate you are a snob who over-pays for coffee while an AM-PM/7-11 cup indicates you are too cheap to pay for good coffee. None are accurate, but they still make an impression. I am a victim of it on our boats. I would not personally want a triple axle trailer on our boat. It isn't neccessary due to our boat weight, it increases the cost and the weight and it is way tougher to trailer in tight spots. That said, using a tandem is seen as cheaping out on it. So, we do the triple. Instead of explaining why the double... we just do the triple.

I totally get it. I just don't understand why it doesn't matter any more. Some very, very, very successful people we work with use the same rationale, and while I don't think any less of them, it makes an impression on me regardless.
I got the Google toolbar a while back, and it has a built-in spell check function for stuff like this. I use it all the time, especially when I have a question regarding spelling. As an example, I hit it in this post, not sure if I had "rationale" correct.
I will tell you this though, it affects my work environment. I have to proof-read everything that goes out the door. Even if spell-checked, the programs rarely can put the spelling in context, so you end up with a correctly spelled, incorrectly used word in a lot of cases.

I got the Google toolbar a while back, and it has a built-in spell check function for stuff like this. I use it all the time, especially when I have a question regarding spelling. As an example, I hit it in this post, not sure if I had "rationale" correct.
I will tell you this though, it effects my work environment. I have to proof-read everything that goes out the door. Even if spell-checked, the programs rarely can put the spelling in context, so you end up with a correctly spelled, incorrectly used word in a lot of cases.
Point taken... The word I hate, and it is used too much is.... THAT! I see it used all the time.
I do have to ask you a question though. Why have you been starting all these controversial Threads? You bored this Winter, or are you just trying to piss off people?  :D

In all honesty, I didn't start any of the controversial threads. RiverDave posted a glowing review of the boat, which of course led to me having a huge head and being an egotistical asshole, and then Waldo posted the "Call me a Trident Hater" thread. Both of which I responded to heavily.
I really don't think people who don't know how to spell realize the impression they leave. They probably wouldn't stand for it if they did. I think that the context of "just the Internet", or "just a schedule board" seems to negate the need to spell properly, or write legibly.
When you don't smoke, and someone who does gets in your car, their choice to smoke affects you. You might not want to think less of them, but you do. Once you stop smoking, and you realize how badly smokers smell, how bad their breath is and how far away you can make that decision about them from... you have a moment of clarity and you realize what everyone must have thought about you the whole time.
Same deal here. Except, that for the most part we are discussing this with adults who will make no effort to go learn how to spell any better. They won't ever know what it looks like from the other side, and will likely not change. Nor is there a large population of people who learned late in life how to spell better, like there is people who have quit smoking and given testimonial.

I pride myself on my spelling and grammar. Probably because the Nuns beat it into me in grade school. I remember all though school, every assignment in every class was graded on spelling. It could be geography class, and we'd still get points off for misspelled words.
When my daughter (now 33 years old) was in school, elementary and high school, I'd check her homework, and just about every other word was misspelled. Now she had beautiful flowing handwriting, but the spelling made her look like a moron. Her answer? They don't take off for spelling.
WHAT! It was English Class. Book reports. Essay questions. And sure enough, she'd get the papers back, and they were scored 100%. I believe that the public school system is at fault here.
Now that "texting" has caught on, I fear it will get even worse.
Another pet peeve of mine is "copspeak". As a police supervisor, I cringe whenever I get reports that have stuff like:
"I exited the front left driver's side door of my marked patrol unit."
WHAT? You mean "I got out of the car"
"I made contact with the operator of the vehicle"
WHAT? Made contact? What was he? From outer space?
"I approached the front entryway of the residence."
WHAT? You walked up to the house.
Also when people use "passive" phrases. Like:
"The prisoner was booked into jail."
(Who did it?)
"The prisoner was booked into jail by me."
WHAT? How about "I booked the prisoner into jail."
And all the things people have already hit on. There, their, they're. To, too, two. Know, no, now. And one of my favorites. "Quite"
"There were no sounds on the street that night. It was really quite."
I don't know who's teaching report writing in the academies, or maybe they've been watching too many Dragnet and Adam-12 reruns, but it seems I have to retrain most of the rookies when they get to the streets.
Now I'm not perfect, and sometimes a typo (typographical error, for you grammar Nazis) or two might slip through, but they're pretty rare.
I've even been known to go over posts on here that I wrote months ago, and edit a misspelling I inadvertantly made.

Not everyone, who communicates on these HB forums, is as educated as you appear to be, Wes. Clearly, some members have a better command of the English language than others. I have no doubt that many of those you view as beneth you are skillful in areas where you are not. Because someone chose to focus on building high performance and not on winning spelling bees, hardly qualifies them as a "dullard". Someone, who portrays himself as the all seeing, all knowing, master off all things, should understand that all men are not created equal. Seems you're just too high on your horse to get it.

I think the balance point question is, "is it easy on the eyes?" Is the post easy or hard to scan through? Posts without proper periods, commas, caps, or ALL CAPS, lower case i (s) instead of I (s). A written word should flow off the page the same way it flowed on to it. If the flow of the writer isn't there, the flow of the reader can't be either. I do my best to use proper grammer and spelling, but I'm not that good at it. I agree that what you write, and how you write it, has a great deal to do with how you are received....MP

I'm going to disagree with your entire sentiment on this one Mr. Wes..
...Nobody gives a shit about the spelling of a few words here in there.. Rather they take away a portion of the experience. RD
Actually, not only was that a great story, but no misspellings jumped out at me when I just re-read it for the second time. With misspellings, it wouldn't have been as impactful. It would have distracted from the story as a result.
Your writing style is conversational, which is wonderful in a setting such as this, where conversation is essentially what is being related. It might have worked well in a magazine editorial section too. Great narrative, good spelling etc...
You didn't make a point using that one.

An excellent point! I have to create contract proposals for customers on a daily basis, so I am one of the poor individuals who must try and ensure that all of my spelling and grammar are correct.
I am not a spelling Nazi in any way shape or form, but I will admit that there are posts from certain people that I will not bother trying to read. I probably have missed some things that may have been educational, or even entertaining, but trying to find my secret decoder ring to read through their posts is just not worth it. I end up with a headache trying to figure out what word they were trying to spell, what point they were trying to make, not quite sure if the subjects in the same sentence relate to one another, and if they did, how?

Wes, your point is well taken by most, I think, but in this world of internet forums and text messaging short cuts are the norm. Misspellings are frequent but I believe many are just time related or like myself, fat fingers on the keyboard. It's also evident that some folks haven't grasped the effect that might affect others when improper words are used in the sentence structure ;), yet we all can still compute and comprehend what they are trying to convey.
I do pride myself on being correct because it matters to me, but I'll never claim that it bothers me so much I have to make a general critique on a public forum.
You yourself have seen the same errors in your own posts which others have pointed out proving you make the same human mistakes all the rest of us do.
"Spell Check" is not the answer or else your effect/affect wouldn't have had to be a guess, this is strictly a learned quality one must possess. I certainly wouldn't think this reflects on you as being a "Dullard", do you?
Respectfully,

How did the ability to communicate effectively using the written word become so lost? I have had over 20 people work for me in the last 3 years, nearly all of which dismiss this ability in one phrase... "I can't spell".
I would contend that effective communication and good spelling skills are not one in the same.
I'm not a particularly good speller but I don't feel it is a disability. If I wanted to be an editor, it would be a problem. I'm good enough, however, that I can do pretty much anything else in life that suits my fancy.
I'm not advocating mediocrity but good communication depends on organized thought, making concise and understandable points, as well as the odd catchy sound byte.
Look at RD. His posts host frequent misspellings but the guy can make a point as well as anyone. If he were a world class speller, I doubt it would improve his ability to communicate in any way.
If EAZYKILLER2006 were a better speller, do you think she would be able to more effectively convey the idea that she enjoys orgasms? I think not.
I frequently cringe when I look back at my own posts that contain typos, misspellings, confused grammar, missing words, editing mistakes, etc. Many of my posts hit the forum without even a quick proof reading. I'll bet others do the same. This is a social forum. It's relaxed and conversational in nature.
Each person has their strengths and weaknesses. The loss is ours if we judge people by one skill without looking at the person as a whole.
Let's not be petty. Let's step out, befriend, and accept everyone who hangs out with us and has a good heart.
That is all.

People don't spell every word right on here... not even me, although it's sad when people misspell shit they should have learned in 2nd grade... http://***boat.com/ubb/graemlins/idea_2.gif
I knew a guy that owned Texas Safari near me. He passed away in jail but that is another story... He made millions, but only had an 8th grade education. I was amazed that someone with practically no schooling could make it like that in this day and age... and fortunately he wasn't on the internet making a fool of himself with his limited spelling skills...:D
